Leandro Damião Has Had A Dream

And so dear reader the pitfalls of consuming cheese prior to turning in.

Longtime Tottingham target Leandro Dime Bar told Sao Paulo radio station UOL: “Every footballer dreams of playing at a club such as Real Madrid, but I am only 23 and there is plenty of time to take that step forward.

“Now is not the moment to be thinking of playing in Europe, I just want to continue improving and scoring goals.

“I have a contract with Porto Alegre, I love it here and do not feel the need to move away right now, although it is obvious that the day will come when I will leave Brazil to go and play in Europe.”

No sour grapes I promise you but I always felt this transfer speculation was botched together by the player’s agent and a media desperate for the next headline. At least we’ll know not to waste our precious time reading further guff on this guy in January I suppose.

What I would quite like for someone to explain (without too many insults to the people of Bulgaria if possible) is why on God’s earth we went shopping at Fulham on deadline day when Utd had sent Berbatov away with a packed lunch and a one-way train ticket to London?

Seriously, 5 goals and 3 assists in 6 appearances, and can anyone say they are surprised? He is the 2nd best CF in the league and he cost them 10 bob in old money. Meanwhile we were too busy picking up a ‘bargain’ dump truck.

    • BrisbaneSpur says:

I raised this the day it happened. I can forgive and forget for those stats (I’m cheap)…. Maybe i’d even like AVB a little more right now??

    • C.O.T.I says:

F**k Berbarat. He screwed us over and isn’t welcome back at WHL.

    • Stupot says:

Berbatov would have been amazing in our team. Shame he left to be misfit at Man ure and not a legend at the Lane. Would like to see a forthright bid for klass huntelaar but I can’t see our testicle light board going for it, sadly.

    • essexian76 says:

Maybe after leaving in such acrimonious circumstances Berba wouldn’t have considered returning to the Lane?-especially knowing how Keane was received and not forgetting the treatment Ghaly got? it mean eating a huge plate of humble pie on Berba’s part and do you honestly think he’s the sort of player who’d admit he was wrong? After all did SAF say he thought Berba was on his way to Spurs?

      • LLL says:

I think that he would have preferred us to Fulham, which itself constitutes a portion of humble pie being quite a step down from Utd. And to be honest, do you really think the haters wouldn’t switch up just as soon as he had banged in 5 goals in 6 games? Keane wasn’t universally welcomed because the finance of selling him for a ludicrous amount of money only to give over half of it back 3 months later looked ill-advised – and most importantly, because he was not the same player on the pitch. Whereas Berbatov would have made a difference and buying a player for 4m who you sold for 33m is a lot easier to swallow.

SAF did say that, perhaps he was just on the wind up, or perhaps just as likely Levy was thinking about it and perhaps went for Dempsey as a ‘politically’ safer option. We may never know, but we do know who came out better off!

        • essexian76 says:

No, Sorry LLL I don’t buy it in anyway shape or form-I couldn’t see Levy having him back anymore than I could see Berba wanting to come back-and any fan with an ounce of decency and creditability wouldn’t contemplate having him wear the chicken badge ever again.I loved the guy(hated Keane mind), but there are ways of doing things and he deserves nothing but contempt-How many ‘prisoners’ do you know who willingly want to go back to gaol?

        • Bruxie says:

It was bad enough when Keane came back.

Sulky would have been scared to come back after that precedent.

        • essexian76 says:

That was my point Bruxie-but it’s not a stick to beat anyone over the bonce with is it?

        • LLL says:

I don’t think there are any really loyal footballers these days, except perhaps for those already playing for the best clubs on the highest wages. So on that basis, what happened with Berbatov, I can’t really get too worked up about it. Can you really blame anyone for wanting to double their wages and win league titles, FA cups and Champions League medals in the process? Really??

Let’s face it, he was perhaps most responsible for Jol getting the sack. And Jol doesn’t seem to have any hard feelings. The days of sentimentality are long gone, football is a business and a career for footballers, managers and the clubs themselves.

        • essexian76 says:

Of course not-‘but it’s not what you do it’s the way that you do it!’ and he crossed the line-and sold us down the Swannie with his timing and his actions-he refused to play for the club FFS! He lied about going to City for an interview- and we ended up shit creek without a paddle-and you’d have him back!!!

        • LLL says:

Well, Berbatov may have led us up shitcreek, but in that case it was Levy who didn’t supply us with a paddle. It’s not for Berbatov to replace himself. Levy didn’t have to take Utd’s money, and didn’t have to get involved in an obvious game of brinkmanship (saying ‘not for sale’ but obviously having a figure in mind). And I guess you could argue that he had in some fashion made some contingency planning by buying Pav, who cost about the same as Berba had originally after all.

It was a case that Berbatov wanted to go to Utd, you agree we can’t really blame him, but that he wasn’t going to be sold easily, for reasons we should also understand (our best player / prime asset). So you can apportion some blame to Utd for playing stubborn on the money, and Levy for brinkmanship. Meanwhile, the fans ultimately suffer the consequences of all the latter parties actions.

        • essexian76 says:

Once again your making assumptions and then calling them facts-If Levy said not for sale, at what point would you consider it common-sense holding onto a player that went on strike to get a move to Utd?
You’d be up in arms as would the board and shareholders-Levy had no viable option available, same as the Campbell situation, when I attended a shareholders meeting and Alan Sugar gave his chequebook and pen to a supporter and said ‘ here you go-you try!’ You’re so blinkered by your opinions sometimes that you can never see things from any other perspective than your own-I’m sure if your partner came back with an expensive pair of shoes, but alas no food shopping you’d be so very understanding?
I’m not sure what you think you bought into when choosing Spurs-but we’re not Chelsea or Utd and the fact we’re even competing at this level is down to ENIC and no-one else LLL- and that’s a fact mate

        • LLL says:

Well, you can’t have it both ways either. You say that Levy meant it when he said ‘not for sale’ but that he then had ‘no choice’ but to sanction a sale. If you can’t make a stand and stick to it, what purpose in making a stand. A better tact would be – Berbatov? 35m and he’s yours. No less. End result is the same, no? Might have happened quicker and been less damaging to the club. Maybe.

ENIC haven’t really put in any cash, and their aim appears to be to eventually take money out of it. Our turnover is the 6th highest in the country. It makes sense that we should be operating at about that level. If Joe Lewis wanted to try and push us on he could invest extra funds – he has several billion in his own pockets after all. I’m not saying that he should or shouldn’t do, but to suggest that they are our saviours and godsend is a bit strange imo. They are a corporation who hold the club as a financial interest.

        • LLL says:

And what I mean by we should be operating about the level of 6th, we are and we can do better than that on the basis that the 4th and 5th highest grossing clubs, Arsenal have suffered from a lack of investment due to refinancing caused by the new ground, and Liverpool have suffered from poor use of their own funds in terms of transfers. Which means the door to 4th place has been left ajar for the past couple of seasons.

        • essexian76 says:

First up-the clues in the title, of course ENIC will sell on-but to be dismissive of what they’ve done for us is quite frankly unfounded. Joe Lewis isn’t a football fan, let alone a Spurs fan and is only in it for a profit-nothing revolutionary there then?
DL not only has his own ENIC board to consider, until recently had those at THFCPLC and their shareholders as well, so it’s pretty naive of you to think everything rests solely on DL’s say so alone?
The point I tried to make was simply-DL didn’t want to sell either Keane or Berbatov,in fact BOTH teams Liverpool and Utd were penalised for tapping them up, if you recall?-Berbatov’s actions forced Levy’s hand-and he reluctantly had no choice, other than sell-a mistake and situation he wasn’t going to make again with Modric-as we could hold onto the player because we’re in a better financial state than we were in 08- largely thanks to ENIC….Oh, and I thought we did finish 4th-didn’t we? And finally until there’s a better option and chairman out there, I’d say we’ve got the best by a country mile right now-unless you can think of anyone better that is?

      • Bruxie says:

        @ Essex.

        No, it isn’t a stick.

It’s just hardly feasible that a player who so desparately wanted to join a team he thought played football with a smile on their face, could possibly come back to us.

He played us for mugs. He’ll be happy at Fulham being the big fish.

        Let’s forget him.

    • Harry Hotspur says:

LLL the comment from Sir Alex was a throw away remark and only a complete gimp would have read it as a revelation that we were negotiating.

      Please.

      • LLL says:

        ???

I’m not relying on SAF’s remark as any kind of proof that we were or weren’t negotiating. I’m saying that the leagues 2nd best CF was available on deadline day for tuppence ha’ppeny and we bought Dempsey. Do you understand?

As for your insult, I hope Bruxie is taking note and is suitably outraged.

        • Harry Hotspur says:

Of course I understand, but had it occurred to you that Berbatov left The Lane under a ruddy blanket?! He’d been on strike.

If you seriously imagine for a nanosecond we would have re-hired him you’re nuts.

        • LLL says:

If you seriously imagine for a nanosecond we would have re-hired him you’re nuts.

Why? Business never personal. Ask Martin Jol.

        • Bruxie says:

At least you have the grace to realise that it is an insult.

And you accuse me of point scoring!

          I don’t use the word. It’s demeaning.

I’m sure HH knows my feeling on the matter.

But like you, I’m not sure he cares.

          Here we go again.

        • LLL says:

I would suggest that you are naive in the extreme if you believe that Berbatov’s last minute sulk routine would hold any sway over whether or not Levy would rehire him. Even most of the fans, who are far more sentimental than Levy, would have likely welcomed him back. And those who maintain they wouldn’t would quickly change tune if he came in and did for us what he’s done for Fulham.

Would you take Modric back, let’s say at half price, in January? I know I would, and so would Levy.

        • LLL says:

Hiya Brux. Of course it’s an insult, I never said it wasn’t. But I knew you would feel differently about HH using it. Even though the context I used it was directly alluding to you being a sex slave and HH seems to be alluding to something closer to your understanding. I guess we all have double standards, eh?

        • essexian76 says:

‘Sulk routine’-nah mate-that was a disgusting and unforgivable action of low life piece of shite, and I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking it?

        • LLL says:

I’m sure you’re not. But as I said, I’m sure if he had come in and knocked some goals in, you’d soon find yourself in the minority.

      • essexian76 says:

Hypothetical because it ain’t going happen-and I’m pretty pleased my allegiance and love of all things chicken isn’t going to be compromised again

  • Paul says:

A club in decline, a seriously clueless manager, a penny pinching chairman and a team that gets booed off the pitch every week, why on earth wouldn’t a young and upcoming superstar not want to play for us?

    • Harry Hotspur says:

And know it all supporters that can barely be bothered to boo. You’re right. We’re not a pretty picture.

      • Stupot says:

When a Spurs team put in a 90, yes 90 minute performance that matches the level of intensity and passion from our long suffering home and away support, then our ‘know it all’ contingent will hold their hands up and applaud. Lacklustre performances (please dont harp on about old trafford, cheating and ref blunders robbed us of a winning result there)and the boards efforts not matching the fans when it comes to the players that will take us to the level we SHOULD be at. How many players through the summer did we target?? Any of them Clint Dempsey lol. Last minute action from an ‘excellent businessman like Mr Daniel Levy just wasn’t good enough. We seemed to be getting somewhere and now with a manager who seems to be lacking serious character. Find it hard to be on his side and root for him when he drops Defoe three days after he just scored a hat trick. Tactical genius or not, Stooopid.

        • JonnyHotspur says:

I thought dropping Defoe and playing Ade away at the champions was the smartest selection he has made as manager?

          I must also be stooopid…

        • LLL says:

          @JonnyHostpur

          Me too! Ha!

        • Alspur says:

Ade had to play at City. Hat-trick or no hat-trick…

        • Stupot says:

Stoopid tha lota ya. Defoe is on form.

        • LosLorenzo says:

Scoring a hattrick in one game against Slovienians hardly qualifies as “on form”.

        • Alspur says:

On form???? If one league goal in the last 5 matches is “on form”, I’d hate to see him when he’s out of form…

…and it’s not like he laid on a whole host of goals for other players, during that time, either, is it??

        • Stupot says:

On form means scoring 3 goals in the previous match, sure Ade may have been most peoples choice but we needed defoe to take a few greedy shots on the day. Ade would have been great to bring on. You always fear past players coming on against you no? Impact sub. How many games has Ade started this term? And in such a big match. Defoe all the way with Ade on in the 70th. Shit em up. AVB DONE WRONG. His team selections are limited with key players still out but on the tactical front i’m streets ahead. 3 goals in his last match even against crippled mongolions with buck teeth, JD”s on the team sheet.

  • Bruxie says:

All this talk of AVB/DL and the balls up in the summer makes you wonder.

January will be a defining period for displaying ambition and a recognition of the shortcomings of the squad.

Dempsey and Siggi need to step up or face a grim future. There’s a couple of others who might find themselves in the “rotation only” pool.

I would hope that the targets are sorted by now and that the early signings will take place.
Somehow though, I think it will be a mix of both early signings and last minute deals.

We have to make at least three top class signings to launch the season. We lose another month – as well as August – if we procrastinate until the end of the window, waiting for the price to come down.

If we haven’t acted by the end of the first week in January – we’ll be following the usual DL pattern.

    :-(

    • Alspur says:

      I could’ve sworn we/you said this, last January, hahaha…

(Makes me feel they’re taking us for mugs – they wouldn’t be, would they?! :D )

Anyway, let’s hope this year is significantly more inspiring than last year… COYS

      • Bruxie says:

        You are, of course, correct.

Erickson and De Jong from Ajax. Huntelaar.

        Let’s go Dutch.

But they’ll need to be out of the ECL.

        • Alspur says:

So, we have to rely on the Blue Mancs dropping points against their remaining CL oppo…

…shouldn’t be too hard to envisage, seeing as they’re practically out of it… might field weakened teams and roll over… here’s hoping, anyway…

        • essexian76 says:

Oooh,a dressing room loaded with Dutch players-that’ll be good for team moral when the chips are down!

        • Hot_Spur says:

Nah, Belgians are in fashion at the moment.

        • Alspur says:

Ooooooooohhh… Fellaini: now, that would be nice…

Can you imagine Sandro, Dembele & Fellaini in MF – we’d murder most team by sheer brute force, alone!!! :D

  • Harry Hotspur says:

A word to the wise. The idea of a Spurs blog is of course to discuss the bad and the good. In fact without the bad it would probably be really dull.

But readers posting endless ‘I told you so’ comments (10 games in) are giving me a headache.

If we were in the same boat as QPR I could understand it and would be as cheerless toward this manager as I was the last one.

But until that doomsday scenario happens outside of the fevered minds of the naysayers then I will remind everyone this is a Spurs blog and not a waiting room for vultures.

  • the man from room five says:

Well that’s that then. Time to throw in the towel.I’m off to a darkened room with a large Jameson and a loaded revolver.
