Andros Townsend

August has been a strange old month for the club, with the squad towards the back end baring little resemblance to that which we began the month with. A lot of the new recruits have made positive impacts during their first few weeks at the club, but my stand out player for August is someone that has risen through the ranks at the club.

A breakthrough month for Townsend was finally recognised by a full England call up, having represented the country at junior levels already. It is perhaps easy to get carried away with the rise to prominence of Townsend, considering how meteoric his climb from the Academy system has been this season, but do we now have a star of the future in our midst?

You could have been forgiven for thinking injury to Lennon may well have left us a little short, but Townsend has well and truly grasped his first team opportunity with open arms.

A scintillating display against a pretty poor Tbilisi side was followed by an equally assured display against Swansea. His incisive running and ever improving end product made him a constant threat in both matches. His contribution to the penalty was a testament to his performance on the day that had the Swansea backline in retreat for much of the afternoon.

Townsend appears to possess all the attributes of Lennon, whilst surpassing him in terms of product. A potent crosser of the ball, with the ability to also cut in and finish with both feet, does Townsend dare I say it remind anyone a little bit of Bale?

His burgeoning self-confidence may well need to be kept in check, but I can only see a promising future for our young starlet.

Will Townsend still be afforded opportunities with the acquisition of Lamela and a returning Lennon? I really hope the lifelong Spurs fan will because he certainly deserves it.
