Tottingham coach and part time Range Rover driver told Radio Talksport:

“If we want to win the Premier League and compete in the Champions League, we’ve got to go after the best players.

“And if Wayne Rooney became available it would be interesting to see if we could go for him.

“For years Spurs have been known as a selling club but if you look at our squad we’ve arguably got the the best squad in the Premier League.

“Harry wants to add one or two quality players to that and, if he can do that, we’ll have a serious chance of challenging for the Premier League.

Man-seen-it says ‘no’ so that leaves Barca, Real, or Chelsea.

Does anyone know; does GD count in CL, or is it the head-to-head? UEFA are always changing something ever year.

Goal difference is first if were tied on points with someone…at this rate we’re ok since werder and twente both have -2 and -3 as long as we can get a result against inter and 1 of those 2 teams we’ll go through.

I really feel there are better strikers out there for us to go after other than rooney.

It’s one thing when the Meedya come out with a load of old bollocks, as they at least have the excuse that it’s their job to make up sensational stories based on nothing. But when one of Arry’s special coaches starts spouting this sort of bile you wonder why anyone would take any notice of him.

Have a look again at what he actually says, as opposed to HHs paraphrasing headline …….it’s pretty stock standard stuff and not anything ‘arry hasn’t said himself. Also I’d be happier to see the questions as well as the answers.

My feelings exactly. I hope he isn’t getting paid by the club to be a spokesman.

ODM. If you listen to the interview, aired on H&J yesterday, it’s hardly what one would classify as ‘bile’. Sir Les comes across well and simply states that we should be after the best players now – and that we’re no longer a ‘selling club’.

WARNING: This started as a few random thoughts but has grown somewhat – probably not for those with a low attention span…….

The subject of Rooney becoming available raises questions in my mind. For me I’d not be fussed if he never put on a Lillywhite shirt, he’s still got a bit to do to make up for what he’s done in the one with lions on IMO. But it begs the question of what we need to do to get those one or two quality signings in.

Our squad at the moment contains quality, depth and sufficient variety to meet changing requirements; its a top quality crown but needs a couple of jewels to really sparkle. The trouble is that Diamonds and Rubies cost more pound for pound, than the precious metal settings they sit in. This leaves us with the dilemma of breaking our wage plan on the one hand or looking to get some quality that might need a bit of dusting and polishing but might also, under the dust, not be a bright and sparkly as we hope.

Clearly the opportunity to hire and deploy for the CL has passed for the moment and there will be limitations for the next window with cup-tying etc. We may well progress we are I think at least the second strongest team in our group, but I think realistically we need to look at this as a learning exercise and try to get it together for the next time, which means qualifying again.

The two scenarios tho’ are not exclusive each to the other, we need to find those jewels to be successful in either or both. We have a good a chance to consolidate our position as a club; ManU and the Dippers are hip-deep in the sh1t flung witlessly across the globe by the US financial collapse. The Gooners are holding their own but are not the force they were and seem intent on controlling their funds at least in the short term. Citeh and Cheatski are starting to open a gap both positionally and money wise. We are the best of the rest and can pull ourselves up with those couple of quality players.

How we attract them tho’ is a matter for debate as there seems to be a very strong intent not to pay market rates for Diamonds and Rubies and getting players like DVD and Berbatov on the deals we did as well as the grooming and coming to term of the likes of Bale, will reinforce that perception.

We need to get a world class defender and a forward who is just starting to come into form. The defender may be the easier of the two to fund, but probably harder to find; any striker who is scoring goals for fun will cost an arm and a leg both to acquire and to fund.

We have some advantages right now. We are financially sound and have a squad that will support the efforts of any class signings. We are at present in the CL and have a realistic chance of being there next year especially if we can attract a couple of top players. Additionally we are a “name” club with a tradition and groundswell support and one well on course to maintain that with new facilities and a new stadium in the wings.

We also need to be mindful that we have to keep what we have got; Bale and DVD and Modric, will be less likely to move on if we have other quality players coming in. Wage demands will be tempered by the quality of the company they keeping and levels of both potential and attainment will lift as a consequence: in short, good players will make other players, play better.

So how do we go about it, should we lift the 80Kpw ceiling to 100K or 120k? Can we do that for a certain class of player whose value can be set above a certain amount? This is already in place to an extent in the way defenders, keepers, midfielders and forwards all have different ceilings within their own markets. If not should we lose the impetus and try to build more slowly, but with the real risk that we may take two steps forward and three back in losing the likes of Bale if we cannot keep pace with his growth and ambition?

I have held the view that Sir Daniel has done remarkably well to maintain our list on the structure, but I cannot see us adding the two quality players, especially the forward, without paying 100K + per week and that may only get us into second string of the top dozen or twenty….. should they become available!

We need to get a top central defender and we need to get them at Christmas. Since everyone else will want the same few players who might be available, we should spend to secure one. We should look at options for our forward line and get the best we can from who is available. We may shop slightly better at Christmas especially from sides with class forwards who go out of the CL at the group stage cut.

We are struggling to be more than mediocre in the League and in the CL, but we are so close……………………… you can almost taste it.

      u are deluded!

    • welshyid says:

i agree, he has been to two world cups now, on both of them he was going to “win” the world cup with his 100’s of goals, and what i can confirm is ..

      ..

.. he has been TERRIBLE on both occasions, maybe he believes his own hype,

the only thing i can remember him doing is scoring his 1st goal and paying prostitutes. . . . .
