“It’s Magnificent To Be In Europe, If We’re Not In Europe…. We’re Nothing. We’re nothing

So was Bill Nick wrong or has the Champions League devalued the  second tier tournament that is the Europa?

I’ve been pondering this issue as I firmly believe that a good few Yids have not only been angered by the whole ‘IdiotGate I & II’ business, but the shortchanged feeling that the absence of Champions League football has filled their hearts.

One minute they were trading bragging rights blows with the big boys, the next they’re back in their box and facing the wrong end of an 18 game tournament usually haunted by the likes of Fulham and now the illustrious Blackpools and Brums of the world.

Let’s not fill another page with Arry’s a ****. Maybe he is, I don’t know the man. But what I do now is we’re in deep, maybe far deeper than those merely on a salary. Europe is something to be cherished and a platform to exploit.

It needs to be managed right or it’ll deteriorate into a The Three Stooges sketch with lots of charging around, bumping into each other and cartoon violence as we implode.  The teams fielded need to be comprised of teams that are capable of wearing the shirt, but not at the expense of the Premiership campaign.

I rather snidely referred to this approach as incorporating the scraps a week or so ago, but if you look at our squad there is enough depth there. Sure, hopefully we’ll sell a few that have been loaned in the last term, but with those that we don’t surely they’d revel in tackling the Europa? I’m sure Levy & Co wouldn’t be against these ‘grey men’ raising their profiles and perhaps the value of their stock?

Some supporters need to examine just where they stand. Missing out on Champions League is a crying shame, but we reached the quarter finals with our first go at it. There is no Easy Street here and it’s down to everyone from the bloke listening on half naffed radio in Kuala Lumpur to the seen it all season ticket holder to the men on the pitch to rise to the naffin’ challenge.

Wanting us to finish 6th was the equivalent of a spoiled child wanting nothing at all if it can’t have another ice cream.

To paraphrase Harold Shand in The Long Good Friday, “What I’m looking for is someone who can contribute to what Tottenham has given to the world: culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than crying over spilled milk , know what I mean?”

We are in Europe albeit not in the CL, but if we are going to be regulars in the PL top 4 we are going to have to deal with the demands of a 3 games a week schedule. In the end we just missed out on the top 4 again because we couldn’t get the consistency of results that life at the top demands.
I think we should be looking forward to another good season in Europe and the PL if we can keep the team together and add some quality. This is Danny’s stated plan and I’m see no reason not to believe him.
Harry has always put out attacking team’s. I don’t think he can help himself even when it may be more prudent to try and contain the oppo’s. Quite frankly I love it – what is it ? ….glory or bust…..wonderful.
We need some striking changes and while I love Gomes I have to say I was less nervous with Carlo back in goal, so maybe a goalie….
If we can get back to the Top 4 and have run in the Cups it will stand us in good stead for the following season.

If no sales or purchases (unlikely I know), we could field:

    Cudicini/Pletikosa

    Naughton/Hutton Caulker/Khumalo Bassong Rose

    Bentley Jenas Palacios/Bostock Krank/Townsend

    Keane/Kane Defoe

I know we wont keep all of the above and I’ve left out one or two who may be eligible (Parrett, Livermore etc) but these players should be capable of getting us a fair way into the competition without jeopardising our first team performance. If we do well, we can introduce some big hitters later in the competition and we may just find that one or two of the youngsters emerge as contenders for first team.

The ‘kids’ will stand a far better chance of getting ‘discovered’ a second time around with this tactic that endless loans to bloody who knows who.

Pletikosa is off back to Eastern Europe. He was only here on loan. Under your assumption of no transfers, he will not be with us next term.

It wont do any harm to have some players feeling like more of a ‘part of the club’ as there are no reserve games and being motivated/match fit if called upon for prem duty as opposed to rusty and horribly off the pace (which is how Krank, Gio and Wilson appeared at times, when they hadnt played for ages).

    Mmmmmm….

HH I can see your point. I was one of those not for ropeydope but since the “announcement” that we’ll play the kids/second string I’d be ok with that.

We all saw what the CL did to our league form – it’ll only be worse in the europa with potential long trips and lots of games.

Play kids/benched players. IF we do well then have a crack in the latter stages, but NOT at the expense of another fourth finish.

    Mr Spiggott – Idiot Savant.
