Hoddle!

Good morning.

I thought it might be nice to have an upbeat blog before we lose at Newcastle. Only kidding about the losing bit. But the mood has been a bit so-so for some while really. Nothing specific to this two bob blog, rather just the Interlull and such.

So scouring the Internet and all the recent stuff didn’t quite do it for me, but I was prompted to share this after seeing it turn up on Spurs Odyssey and this is quite simply a lovely bit of footage.

Perhaps we could solicit a few memories of the man and get ourselves all geared up for Sunday?Yes, I think we can.

Hoddle was a pivotal figure in my formative years as a young Tottingham fan. And watching this film brings it all back. You look at the state of the pitches and the state of the tackles and yet his feet danced with the ball. If he was playing today he would embarrass so many players who are routinely cooed over and insanely overvalued financially. Glenn was the real deal.

Did you see him play? Did you do his hair? Did you once let him your static caravan in West Runton? Talk to me…

I saw most of the Spurs home matches 75-85, so I saw the best of Hoddle, I even enjoyed the season in the second division. The film is great, it captures moments of brilliance that have been overlooked in previous compilations.

No one quite played football like Hoddle, some display glimpses of what he could do, no one could pass a ball like Hoddle, both feet, inside and outside of the boot.

I’ll never forgive Ron Greenwood for picking Steve Hunt over Glenn Hoddle, “Steve Hunt?” precisely.

Hoddle never got the credit for turning around England in ’86 World Cup, the Crab – Wilkins was suspended and the workhorse – Robson was injured, suddenly Bobby Robson “had” to use Hoddle (with Peter Reid), suddenly England improved. When they show the match against Argentina they always show John Barnes but never Hoddle’s free kick that hits the post.

You can only imagine what great moments are lost from the first division days that would have been captured by the wall to wall coverage we have today in the Premiership.

Oh for someone to stick them away from 25 yards like that now. Weird bloke but fabulous player – as you say H what would he be worth today?

saw him 3 times at the end of 87 inc the Oxford game where he signed off with that wonderful goal after taking out 2 defenders in the center circle then putting the keeper on his backside before scoring and saluting the Paxton. Wonderful, wonderful memory. Love him.
