On The Defensive

Good morning viewers.

Transfer rumour wise there is nothing out there at all. Well, once you discount the recycled Edna Hazard stuff of course. But if we learnt anything from the weekend other than the pitfalls of assembling large numbers of Chelsea fans in a public place then it was the desperate need for at least two decent defenders.

Very few games left until the close of the season and I’d be far more interested in hearing suggestions for two new defensive recruits than more tiring fantasy chatter in favour of landing some Hollywood striker.

King has had it and the kindest words I can muster on that front are that it seems highly improble that there is any way back for the old girl. Gallas was chewed out for a ropy performance on Sunday, but beyond that one game he’s 34 and we might, might just get one more season out of him.

Dawson could fulfill his potential, but that simply will not happen if the cycle of mend and make do continues. Walker has potential too but as I end up saying every week I don’t believe he’s being coached effectively. The thrill of his pace if all he ever achieves with it is the odd throw in or corner isn’t enough. Especially given we rarely appear to gain any discernible advantage from any set pieces.

This era of chancing our arm defensively has to be closed, Spurs have got to bite the bullet and quit the practice of buying cheap, buying twice. It’s a no brainer that the demands of the Barclays Premier League are such that the days of shipping in some bright prospect and developing him are virtually gone. So stop it and target a pair that have already got their boy scout Defender badges.

I’m unconvinced we’ll secure Champions League football this season. But then Spurs have become a dog chasing a car. What would we do with it if we caught it?

A goalkeeper isn’t a priority, one bad game doesn’t make Carlo a clown. Deployed right (if they don’t all bail) we have a magnificent midfield. Ade, Rafa, Saha and the Midget Gem can all score if and when properly serviced.

The urgent issue is the back line. Oh yes, that and someone professional to bring it all together, of course.

The legends just won 19-1 I think. Time to bring back Nethercott :-(

The secret, I suspect, is to get rid of Arry. Any half-decent replacement will see that we need youngish, fit defenders. Why he can’t see that will remain a mystery.

I blame Levy for our fiasco! We have all known for some time that harry will be leaving and that is perhaps why we have spent next to nothing in the last 2/3 transfer windows. A team sitting in 3rd in Jan should not be buying/loaning crap players who couldnt get into very average teams. Levy shouldve said sign a new contract or fuck right off now. So here we are at the end of a crazy season that has seen us play some beautiful and shit football in equal measures. Talk about a rollercoaaster. We have been smashed to bits by the filth, chels & city and quite frankly its not good enough. Ledders is finished (and has been for quite a while) Modric has been shit for 3 months and cant shoot/score for love nor money and the rest have been hit and miss. We have a manager who has been talking about our summer transfer targets and our pre season tour to the US and he wont even been in the hot seat come the end of May. The fella is an embarrasement to our club and Levy needs to take action fast. We have 5 games left and we all need to get behind the team to show our support and to help drive them over the CL finishing line!!! COYS xxx

cant blame levy, you are purely guessing, there is no way to know what went on.

retire Gallas, King and Nelsen. Get Caulker back, sign Vertonghen. Get Saha out, Ade wont come, so two new strikers. Then get Modric out ASAP, hes been on the beach since Januray, he doesnt care, he isnt trying so get rid.
Finally Moyes in to oversee it all.

The next few seasons until the new stadium will be tough but we will be in such a stronger position when we come out of it, just keep your nerve and remain realistic

Well put, but the new manager will have different priorities:

I think the first job will be to see who is left. We can’t realistically count on Modric staying if Chelski, Fergie and Citay and all going after him.

So he’ll have his work cut out figuring who he is working with. King and Modric leave two gaping holes in a side struggling to make 4th spot. Ade – we simply cannot afford – so that’s the end of that. So that’s three players down and one (albeit massive) transfer fee collected.

We need a manager who is clever in the transfer market, able to compensate tactically with un-tested squad, experienced at blending new players in and able to close our a season without having his pants pulled down.

  • Rogerspurs says:

Arry “If you want to compete you have to buy top players. We’ve not paid massive transfer fees in the past because we’ve been OK.
But you have to keep pushing on and I think the club would do it if we came up with the right targets. Daniel would pay the money, he is ambitious.”
I think, Arry, Daniel’s waiting for somenone to tell him which ‘top players’ are needed, and preferably during the transfer window.
