Adebayor’s Pulling A Fast One

Good evening.

Gregg Stobart is a correspondent for Goal.com and as has been highlighted on the COYS forum earlier today, there are some interesting interesting suggestions by him in relation to this transfer saga via Stobart’s Twitter account, @gstobart.

The situation was relatively straightforward. Adebayor and City have a contract whereby he is due (let’s say) £175k a week.

So if somebody else wants to take him the player has a choice to either take a pay cut (if City are willing to sell him) or for City to subsidise his salary, the latter happened while he was loaned to Spurs.

It was said by a few (yes, including me) that he had signed. He’d agreed terms with Spurs and this was communicated to City. City agreed to continue to subsidise him in order to lessen their load for a player that wasn’t ever going to kick a ball for them again.

So at this point, Adebayor is all set to formally join Spurs.

Then we  get this line about Adebayor not wanting his charity to suffer. But his charity wouldn’t beacause he’d be in receipt of the same monies that he was at City and while on loan, the partially subsidised £175,000 a week.

Stobart claims that Adebayor has now announced that he wants the £4M transfer fee which was set to pass from Spurs to Manchester City …to instead be handed …directly to him.

Which would in effect result in Manchester City letting him go ‘on a free’.

I understand that footballers want to keep their financial affairs low key as not everyone ‘admires’ the vast amounts of cold hard cash that they earn in return for kicking a ball about.

But given that so many elements of this tale are in the public domain, now is the time for Adebayor to – as they say in certain parts of the North of England – shat or get off the pot. He should step out of the shadows and make a statement and put the record straight.

The Spurs end of this were sewn up a good few weeks ago. City hummed and harred but decided  as I say to cut their losses.

I believe that Stobart could well have got the goods on Ade here. If so, this ‘playing the charity card’ stunt is in poor taste.

But you promised us him Harry :( worst christmas ever….

  • AVB's Beard says:

Greedy little ***t. But to be honest, can anyone be that suprised. All he has done is reverted back to the image we all had of him before he signed for us….. Oh well. Thing is, when do we cut our loses, stop negotiations and start chasing another striker? Off season transfers started so so well but since then we have done nothing but chase a lost cause and not sell the player that we all know is going to be sold. We need action fast. On a lighter note, i’ve found good odds on AVB being the first manager sacked this season……. ;)

Nah, bob di matteo and brendan rodgers will get sacked before avb

Why are some fans wishing avb fails. We need 2 back him he is a good manager and we be a success. Next season can b a great one 4 us but all fans need 2 be on the same page

I’m not hoping he fails. I’m a Spurs fan, why would I hope he fails? I’m saying he might fail if he has to start the season with 2 average strikers and a want away rat…..

Do you think Bale is good enough 2 do the ronaldo role at real madrid

        • AVB's Beard says:

possibly. his diving is improving… ;)

Not sure what you mean mate?

Bale our number 9. Centre forward

        • AVB's Beard says:

We have the best left winger in the league. A very hard position to fill. Why waste that and move him to CF. Levy needs to pull his finger out and get in 2 world class forwards. We shouldn’t even consider moving bale into this role.

Why would you hope he fails?! Ehh, because you put money on him. I love people who conveniently forget what they said earlier.

        • AVB's Beard says:

I didn’t actually put money on. It was a joke, dramatising the ‘woes’ we may face this season and exagerating my point. I hope for nothing more than his appointment to be a raging success. I’m just worried that, with the season less than 3 weeks away, we still need some major reinforcements to ensure AVB is successful.

      • `rich g says:

im not hoping he fails, ITS JUST MY OPINION THAT HE WILL, IS THAT OK WITH YOU???

    • Ramos43 says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Levy has had a word with Ade in an attempt to try and get the big striker to try and orchestrate getting a free transfer out of city! This would mean that spurs have to PAY LESS over the duration of his contract. Do not be so hasty in your judgement my friend…

      • COY'super'S says:

I’m not overly worried about our striking situation. AVB has promised at least 2 more and even if there isn’t any action at the moment I’d rather wait for it than see Redknapp buy every single player over 30 in hope that one of them scores a goal. I trust AVB. Don’t forget we also still have Gio. He produces so well for Mexico but he’s never really had a chance to prove himself in the premier league, I say give him a go as our front man and see what he can do. If he fails then ill worry

  • TMWNN says:

I thought his cut in pay was going to be subsidised by us giving him a massive signing on fee.

I wouldn’t expect City to hand him their transfer fee too. He’s taking the piss.

    • Cornerpin says:

      City Take the Piss…

      • TMWNN says:

What, by paying him £175k a week, when he’s worth nowhere near that?

If he feels he should earn that, fine, sit in their reserves for another 2 years and carry on being overpaid, but we shouldn’t allow his greed to fuck up our season.

  • superspurs says:

Meh… Dont think hes “that” good anyway

Nice to see his true colours coming out now, we are best shot of him dont need an ego to ruin team spirit.

Bale will play in the hole this season any how so he’ll be more forward like than winger. Can see him going into 2013 as an out and out striker as well

  • Minionas says:

I don’t want him if that’s the case.
