Fabrique Belgique C’est Creme De La Menthe!

Good morning.

These Interlulls have becomeĀ  increasingly tedious. I don’t know if football has moved on or regressed but International football is about as ‘on trend’ as a pair of plus fours. The first question is rarely ‘did you see it?’ rather ‘any injuries?’

Two Tottinghams featured in the goal rush. The Midget Gem Defoe and new boy Jan Vertonghen.

Defoe

Textbook Defoe. The game itself was in the main unwatchable fare with Moldova looking not so much outgunned but a bit scared. James Milner also scored which if you missed the action, gives you an idea as to what joys you managed to swerve.

Vertonghen

This is an interesting proposition for us now as Jan would appear (on the strength of this clip at least) to have the power and direction that several of our wannabe free kick specialists such as Kaboul and Walker lack. Perhaps the boss wants to include this in one of his Power Points for the Reading game?

Like the cut of Vertonghen’s jib? Well, if you want to listen to the world’s greatest Spurs podcast here, you’ll also catch a remix of an Eagles classic dedicated to the bionic Belgian.

Would be tasty if Vertonghen kept Vermalen out of the Belgium starting 11. I’m all for the small joys of life.

More interest in the Wales game with 3 spurs on the pitch so flicked between the 2 matches, yes great free kick, now that vdv can’t monopolise the free kicks we might actually score one this season !

    Thats more like it HH!

Moldova were really awful, so bad infact that Gerrard & Lampard looked 10 years younger.

Defoe had quite a few chances and maybe AVB can develop a pattern of play whereby Dembele is in a postion to thread him through more often.

Anyway, it was the result that counted more than anything last night and we’re off to a good start.

We (Tottenham) will never win anything with Defoe. Nor will England come to that. I am still amazed AVB extended his contract.

      • Paul9inch says:

Good move by Levy as it puts spurs in the drivers seat regarding any future sale.

I like Defoe but not as a lone striker. You have to be really exceptional to fulfill that role given his size & if he were that good he wouldnt be at spurs.

        • Ronnie Wolman says:

I agree that Defoe is not very potent as a lone striker. He cannot fight his way through like a Drogba can or hold the ball up like an Ade or Berbatov.
Defoe has a limited group of qualities, but what he can do ,he can do well.
As a part of a double striker force he could be ok. I havent seen anything yet in Ade and Defoes game where they are tuned in to each other. They rarely connect or maybe we just havent played them enough together.
Defoe is good running onto a pass and shooting with some space or sliding one in close.Thats it.
So the situation has to be right.Maybe with our midfielders now capable of attacking the goal there will be opportunities for Defoe but it seems so far there have been few.

I wouldnt read in too much to Vertonghens free kick.
For me we have a lot of players who can attack goal and before we go putting money on set pieces to save us I think we should get the defence in order (they need to be more tuned in) and let the two D’s power help make something happen in the other end where we’ve been totally ineffective.
It would be good to get some scoring out of set pieces but we have to get the fundamentals right of our game in general.

    • Habib says:

So basically you’re saying the solution to a striker that misses a lot of chances is to give him more chances so that statistically his chance to score increases….

Funny ’cause you see I’d just get a striker who converts more!

      • LLL says:

Good idea but we passed on it again this Summer so we will indeed need to work with Defoe.

      • Ronnie Wolman says:

No I said that the situation has to be right for Defoe. He cant work in every situation.
What striker do you suggest Levy buy????????
He obviously not looking to spend a lot on one considering it was our main problem and the really good players are are expensive for us.
We could have maybe got Carroll or Berbatov if we reacted quick enough and that would have no been a bad solution considering.
Ade is not a pure goalscorer and spends more time running out of the box than it.Defoe needs the situation to be right to make it happen.
So either we find more constructive ways to make it happen with the players we have or we can live in a dream world.
Ade and Defoe could definately form a partnership but they have to work at it.
With Dempsey and Dembele also attacking the goal Defoe WILL get chances as the area will open up more.

        • LLL says:

The Metro reckons we put in a ‘cheeky’ 20m deadline day bid for Negredo, but they ignored it as it was too late in the day to do business.

It’s probably bullshot, but it’s out there.

        • Ronnie Wolman says:

Levy has spent millions maybe billions on cheeky last day bids. Its good for the company line not the forward line.More hype than substance.
I mean every BIG team spends that kind of money on stars dont they.
They are offers that cant be accepted never mind refused

      • Ronnie Wolman says:

Habib they have to think inside the box and you maybe outside…

        • Habib says:

Lol. I think we’ll be fine with a fit Ade and Defoe as an impact sub. Think about what Defoe does. He turns and shoots. That means if he doesnt score he turns possession over. That’s just a no-go for AVB. I mean he was ready to flog Lennon apparently for his dodgy final ball that had the same effect.

  • Perrymann says:

We need to gel,AVB will have us purring given time.

  • Ronnie Wolman says:

Nobody (I think) has mentioned Harry Redknapp is now doing all stations along the south coast to Dorset stopping at Portsmouth,Southampton and now Bournemouth.
He wanted to start at the White Cliffs but they wouldnt let him.
I could see him now as a future ticket collector collector at Weymouth.
