Good morning.

The latest Half Hour is here and with it we bring you comfort, warmth and shelter from the occasionally cruel world outside.

ODM and I have a look at the aftermath of the Norwich game and what is without doubt the crux of the matter, the loss of Luka Modric and the loss of Rafa van der Vaart.

There’s the release of two smash hit singles one of which may remind you of Saturday Night Fever and the other has more than a passing similarity to an old Eagles number. In both cases this is entirely coincidental.

Our guest is the eloquent Habib. Who is now HHH’s official Foreign Correspondent for Lahore and Enfield East. Should you wish to take part in future shows and represent your plot in a foreign field that will forever be Lliywhite then simply mail in on harry-hotspur@snack-media.com and we can discuss the opportunities that await you as an online radio star.

    Hi all,

Just had a look at this article:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/9514149/Graphic-Premier-League-transfer-and-wage-spending-from-the-200001-season-to-201112.html

Makes some interesting reading. Just as a quick comparison on transfer budgets etc since 2000/01 season:

Spurs – Total net transfer spend: 122,857,000
Arsenal – Total net transfer spend: -8,704,000

Spurs – Total wage spend: 525,400,000
Arsenal – Total wage spend: 911,700,000

    Spurs wages 2010/11 – 91,100,000 (6th highest)
    Arsenal wages 2010/11 – 124,400,000 (5th highest)

    Spurs spend (tranfers+wages) – 648,257,000
    Arsenal spend (transfers+wages) – 902,996,000

Just goes to show, we might be able to compete on the transfer fee but still miles behind in terms of salaries on offer. The difference in us and Arsenal on wages in 2010/11 works out at about £640k a week. That’s an RVP, Rooney, Augero with about 40k left!

    • Ronnie Wolman says:

But they dont have any of them. They sell their best players and up the wages of the ones they have.

We on the other hand buy volume in each position…well not each….some we dont have any…and loan everyone out

      • CLaw says:

Just think it’s a useful tool to show how far we’ve still got to go before we can compete with the top clubs on wages. It’s what makes the new stadium such a priority.

Chelsea were the highest spending on terms of wages in 2000/01 and spent 50,200,000 on wages. We didn’t get to that level until 2007/08. We still currently spend less than half of what they do!

        • Ronnie Wolman says:

The problem is the way the businesses are running.
With someone who has mega money, that wants stardom, its easy to live in the non real world.

In Tottenham’s case its a business built on more conservative values. It has to pay for itself so there are no stats that add up because both frame or references are entirely different.

The stadium is the key to unlocking the safe to invest in a future that will pay pack but you also have to keep the fans fairly happy (see boos)
while you still try to compete and build at the same time. Its difficult. Its a balancing act.

Levy is a business man primarily but he isnt what he thinks he is and thats an entrepeneur. He is trying though. He is taking the lead but lets face it accountants very rarely create.

        • Clarkspur says:

Yep, stadium is a must, hence the Olympic Park bid, the court case and the need to have ‘London’ (in all its various official capacities) on side before committing to the David Lammy Northumberland Park Project.

But before we think Levy’s just a bloke who rings bells, strokes his chin on match day and drives a hard bargain 2 months of every year, take a moment to remember the training facilities. They are pretty much heralded as the best in world football now. And not because of the plush decor but the sheer technological/professional advancements it has. Seeing how the ‘boys’ spend 5 days of the week there and just a few hours at WHL, I think the new facilities will add something extra once the move is complete. :daumen:

        • Ronnie Wolman says:

Clarkspur I dont disagree. But right now its a balancing act and being Levy is not just about balancing the books, its about balancing keeping the fans happy.
I think that booing by fans is ludicrous but booing does get the message across. Corporate people understand booing. The people that boo the hardest get what they want and that is getting through a message that bad service is not acceptable.

The fans will say that they want the club to understand their passion. While its a business to the business people to the fans its a passion.
The business people play the game of passion, players kiss the badge, owners hug their captains but they are business people.

Abramovich is a post business person. This is a hobby.
For Man City its a way the owners can show power,in an oil rich world.
But for us,its a business that needs balancing and fans want their piece of the action if they are going to give as much as they do.

the practice facilities by the way is difinately an asset but not like buying a player. It will retain its value but it cant get you into the CL.

        • Clarkspur says:

Ronnie, yeah I know what mean, it’s juggling many balls. But let’s be honest, can you imagine Levy interviewing AVB and thinking to himself we’ll be off to a bad start, we’ll tolerate the boo-boys and we will slowly commence Operation Flog-our-footballers?

If anything, with a new kit maker and various new commercial deals signed for this season, he would have wanted a good start to see the commercials take off and reward sponsors with the feel-good factor that goes with a successful team on the pitch. Winning games sells seats, shirts and stock in the Tottenham brand, as well as fuelling demand for the future.

Whether Levy counts points or pennies, winning and getting fans/sponsors to part with cash goes hand in hand. I don’t see Levy going as far as ordering a Llorente online from the Bilboa catalogue but I think he’ll do what it takes (within the commercial models) to get us winning.

Nobodies in the business of losing. If you think about where this club was under Sugar and where it is now, Levy is not going to throw years of hard work in shitter just to save a few quid as he is constantly accused of.

        • Ronnie Wolman says:

Clarkspur no Levy is not stupid,I agree. He is very clever. He has the money still in his hand.He can use it anytome. So January would be a saver if he needs it.
When we were on the bottom look what he did.He didnt wait.He bought players.
He is balancing keeping the fans relatively happy with keeping it relating to revenue.
On AVB I dont really know.I know he did well and I know he did not o well. There is not enough info either way but levy saw his options and took it.
He could have maybe had a Moyes and maybe he thought that he wanted someone a bit more international that could bring players in from the continent. AVB is a thinker. My problem is maybe he is ONLY a thinker. But look Wenger is a thinker too and hasnt done bad.
But I do understand Levys thinking (I think) and he is not over the top in what he spends.
Im sure it will change with the new stadium.
You know you can go down Petticoat Lane and go well I need a shirt, you dont really case what kind of shirt as long as it feels pretty good the color is not horrendous and the price is great value.Maybe you buy three shirts. You really need a jacket though and you’ve been around. An average jacket wont do you have to go to meetings and look professional….so you kind of stick with the one you have till you see a sample ona rack somewhere….
Later when you get a really top quality job you need to look better. There is no question at that point. You to to Sloane street and kick it up a notch.

Build the stadium and they will buy suits.

        • CLaw says:

          Ronnie + Clarkspur

Agree with all you’re saying on this. From the outside looking in and with know ITK rubbish, I’d imagine that the recent transfer window was a combination of the people we wanted coming in (Sigg, Vert, Lloris) who all fit the commercial plan of being young enough to be VFM if they stay at the club long-term or are sold for profit in the future. Tying up the existing players we want to keep to new contracts (Bale, Lennon, Caulker, Naughton, Defoe etc) so we can’t lose them for small change and, finally, getting in some short-term additions that might not have been top of the list but are good value and/or have potential (Dempsey and Dembele).

All of this fits in with the prudent spending strategy needed in light of us trying to fund a new stadium, the current global financial situation and upcoming UEFA fair play.

Expect us to be in again for Moutinho (if we think he’s needed) in Jan.

        • Clarkspur says:

Ronnie – I was with you until we had to make a decision about 1 shirt or 3, then bamboozled at the point that we were debating just how professional our jacket looked for the meeting???

What meeting? Sloane Street, jackets, roll up roll up, 3 shirts for the price of 1 madam, roll up roll up, what about your sir?

          :finn:

        • Ronnie Wolman says:

Clarkspur, the cheap shirts are good for when you are at 35,331 capacity. When youkick it up a notch to an all star 65,856 not including HH’s box seats, you need a top notch Jose Mourinho whistle.
Thats where the professional suits come in.A little shiny,a knock off of the old tonik, white shirt and striped tie.Schweppes all over your tonic. Not stirred just spilt…but you still come out looking cool.
Tottenham the coolest club when they get the new stadium.
When you have box seats at the new stadium they throw the suit in.
So back to the beginning of the story. Daniel is planning all the things I am saying,Harry Hotspur is lining up already for the box seats…we are in for a ride…yes it was shaky back then that fateful September in 012 but we ironed out all the problems and AVB kicked it upa notch and we are enjoying the best run any club has ever seen….ever.
and to think, you all doubted them.

          Unbelievable.

        • Ronnie Wolman says:

Claw, forget prudence. That was back in 012. Its history now.

    • Habib says:

THANK YOU! I always tell people when they shove the “Arsenal dont spend money but still finish above Spurs” fact in my face that the biggest component of a Club’s spending is never transfer fees but always wages. I remember back in 2007/ 2008 the wages difference between Arsenal and Spurs was like 50M pounds! They were paying their players double!

The net spend formula HAS to be: Players bought + wages minus players sold.

      • LLL says:

Wages plus they are still paying for their stadium. Oh, and scraping off a tidy profit for their greedy owners.

      • CLaw says:

        Cheers Habib,

My thought exactly! Have this argument with Gooner fans all the time. They trot out the transfer spend figures but neglect the wages which are by far a clubs biggest outlay!

Even after selling Fabregas, Nasri and Clichy (3 of the highest earners I’d imagine), Arsenal still spent 124,000,000 on wages. We’re still 8,900,000 shy of the 100m mark!

        • Habib says:

Here’s the real kicker mate! If you read the Deloitte money report for the last two years they have made a combined profit of USD 180M from property redevelopment ON TOP of their footballing revenue!!!!! Where’s that money? Kroenke also has a mysterious loan from Deutche bank that is secured against Arsenal. I’m telling you on paper have no business competing with them.

Thank god they got the Americans. Had that female owner of their not been xenophobic and sold her shares to Usmanov who made billions from just the facebook IPO, they’d be winning every year.

        • nobby nobbs says:

Is that all players money or does it include all wages?

        • essexian76 says:

It’s why I posted on Sunday after RVP’s third goal ‘that’s what 68m get’s you’..not 25m as the transfer fee is only a fraction of his cost

  • caddyshack says:

that is a decent podcast boys so well done

  • Mitchell Thomas says:

I knew Habib before he went ‘global’. Bloody superstars. He’ll be dating some orange fattie off TOWIE next.

  • LLL says:

I wish I’d listened to this some time ago before I had that brainwave with the superglue.

  • Harry Hotspur says:

ODM, we’ve spawned a global mega sex icon superstar monster
