Faith: A Condemned Prisoner Requesting A Doggy Bag During His Last Meal

Good afternoon.

I’m struggling to get my head around where the boss is heading with this whole Adebayor business. Now clearly I write this from the perspective of someone who believes Adebayor to be a superior player to Defoe.

…at the moment we’re using one striker and Defoe is doing extremely well. At the moment, Adebayor is in contention for games where we play two strikers. He’s done extremely well in the games that he has come on but we have not found comfort in a formation with two strikers yet.

Villas-Boas oversaw this transfer. It was so – on – then off – then back on again – that it would be ambitious to suggest he didn’t have the opportunity to halt it. Also, there is this whole extraordinarily in depth scouting business. It’s really difficult to argue that once Ade eventually showed up for training that smiles suddenly turned into frowns. AVB must have known what he was buying.

Adebayor is not only a superior player of unquestionable human dimensions but he’s also not cheap. This isn’t like having Livermore sometimes getting a game, sometimes not. At least we now now that it isn’t a hamstring, it’s a tactical choice – but why Ade doesn’t fit the system is something I’m struggling to see.

I’ve great faith in the boss. But this does leave me really puzzled.

Jermaine Defoe has been great this season. And as any seasoned Spurs supporter will tell you, this has come as a surprise.

When JD’s on form, you milk it.

I would suggest his good form has been sparked by a surge in confidence, gained from being 1) back in the England team and 2) retained as Spurs’ starting striker even after the “superior” Adebayor has been bought.

The alternative is to take him out of the team, crush his confidence, and have Adebayor with no backup (because, honestly, Defoe without confidence is not worth having).

An in-form Defoe with Ade on the bench is better than Ade with an out-of-sorts-Defoe on the bench.

It’s a lot like the goalkeeping situation. If you take Brad out, ruin his confidence, and then Lloris doesn’t cut it straight away then you’re in trouble.

I also, unlike you, do believe that Ade was injured and unfit when he joined. The fact that he hasn’t gone straight into the team the second he’s fit is, if you’ve read the rest of my post, pretty logical.

      Couldn’t have put it better.

I doubt Ade’s upset with AVB but at the sametime I doubt he’s happy at being on the bench. Every big team has this problem and it’s a good problem to have. The only time a player should become frustrated with this is if it’s not handled properly, ie the benched player is not getting chances and the one on the field is not proving his worth. Start dropping players who are in form and we end up just like we were before with ‘Arry and his favourites.

I think the goalkeeping situation is a little different. Brad has enough maturity to handle being dropped regardless of form. He knows who and what he is, what his place in the squad is. He has perspective. He is, in essence, the model professional.

Unlike other members of the squad who do not have these aforementioned qualities.

      Spot on. Very well put.

The quotes don’t read well for someone who has a good grasp of English – “Ade fits in to a 2-striker attack but we won’t be playing a 2-striker attack.” I feel like he could have diffused this all by saying “Adebayor is a fantastic player and will get opportunities to prove his worth” or something similar. All he’s done is opened up the debate to rumble on for a long time ahead… On top of that, at a guess probably 85% of Spurs fans would say right now that Adebayor offers more to the team.

Why can’t we have a 2 striker attack?
