Norwich Autopsy

Good afternoon?

Well I’ve had worse I suppose. The game itself wasn’t our finest hour nor was it quite self harming territory. The bottom line is that this competition was the last of our priorities. Nice to win a pot but for those believing we ought to have gone all out …I’ve two names for you. McLeish & Dalglish.

The appearance of Bale was a welcome surprise and had he not featured it’s a cheerless exercise to dwell on how we would have performed. He was the spark, the drive, the creative.

The young guys given a chance did their best. Falque is an interesting chap. There’s a raw energy there. A fast paced mind at work. But he needs managing training and guiding. I look at him, Livermore, Townsend and Walker all whom are ‘products’ of our academy or whatever it’s trading as this week and worry.

Are we producing footballers or people who simply look like footballers, impressionists?

Maybe I imagined it, but Livermore looked to have more about him when he debuted. Now we have this Jenasesque fella that looks like he’d be more at home in one of those partially naked calenders that firemen do for charity. Walker looks like a rep for a company that services gym equipment. Falque like an assistant manager at Toni & Guy.

My point is why are their footballing IQ’s so low? Falque took two maybe three corners and the ball didn’t beat the first man once. In fact the damn thing was smacked in a light speed at knee height. Jake concedes the most cheap and hopelessly unnecessary fouls. Walker’s dive for the penalty was the work of an impressionist.

This was pretty much a Norwich B team vs a Spurs B team for want of a better description. I’m just saying I would have hoped for more given the opposition.

We went a goal up and then proceeded to act as as if the thing was won. Slowed the game, passed as if we were playing the time out. A child could have predicted this wasn’t a very good plan. Any child able to use a clock or a watch.

Our traveling firm were great value. ‘Norwich City, your sister’s your mum’ followed by a Grant Holt’s arrival prompting a chorus of ‘Grant Holt, he eats when he wants.’

Norwich scored twice and we missed a penalty. This beast on Twitter was quick to voice her support direct to Clint on Twitter. Despite being at the game in person!

I take the view that if people are on Twitter they have to take their chances, maybe not everyone thinks you’re as wonderful as your mother repeatedly told you you were. But why would you Tweet Dempsey that? Jeez, he knows that he missed. My best guess is he didn’t do it on purpose.

Is there a moral to last night’s story? Probably not. But we do need a striker and we need Moussa Dembélé. Like a rose needs rainwater, like a leopard needs its partner in the jungle, like… I don’t know what like.

Please Moussa be fit. It’s all i want for Christmas

We missed Brad Friedel’s steady hand in goal.

    • shannon says:

A Norwich City ratings site says: “Hugo Lloris: At fault for Jackson’s winner by parrying Holt’s header into his path.” They don’t know what they’re talking about, do they? We know it was the media’s fault.

    • Bobbles says:

I am worried about Lloris, I’ve seen nothing so far to justify the hype. Looks a bit lightweight, and his flapping/punching/deflecting antics are only marginally more confidence inspiring than Mr Gomes.

I take this ‘hes unhappy’ based business with a pinch of salt, but if it’s true he’s got a bloody cheek. Needs to start listening and learning from Brad.

      • LosLorenzo says:

What flapping? He came off his line for many crosses. Each and every time he did, the ball ended up outside the penalty box, at an angle (not a shooting position, when it landed at Norwich feet). When the ball was too far out, or the box was too crowded to get there, he stayed on his line. That’s what a good goalie is supposed to do.

This is totally different from Gomes. He came off his line seemingly at random, and when he did, only got on the ball about 50% of the time.

I thought Lloris looked good. Second goal isn’t his fault in any way. Most goalies wouldn’t even have got a hand to it. He did, but was let down by defenders sleeping on the job. Two Norwich players standing completely unmarked, ready to tap in. FFS, Huddlestone was the only white shirt even remotely trying to be ready for a rebound from a header (although he too had dropped his man). That pretty much says it all… Schoolboy defending.

First goal was a hard deflected shot. No goalie on planet Earth saves that.

Don’t remember any scary moments where Hugo was to blame. What more can he do?

      • ldn hackney says:

If your worried about lloris your opinion ain’t worth being said mate because you obviously don’t know anything about football. It’s not opinions its a FACT that he’s one of the top 5 or 6 keepers in the world, probably 3rd behind buffon and casillas, neuer and hart are both still young with less experience. If we had higuian or benzema rite now would u rather defoe be in the team?!

    • nipper says:

…I prefer Lloris to Friedel, who spends every game giving away possession and never comes off his line. Sooner or later we need a change of goalkeeper, and I really don’t think Lloris was to blame at Norwich…the defenders who gave Holt a free header were.

  • Swanspur says:

I know this cup wasn’t a high priority, but the simple fact is that AVB is useless.

When we go one goal up he goes defensive until the opposition take the lead.

He doesn’t seem to realise that Livermore is just not premiership quality. How many times has he come on and we have surrendered the midfield.

Walker has gone backwards since AVB arrived. Demsey and Siggurdson were doing it last year but under AVB hopeless.

When will he realise that Defoe need more help to become effective.

And whats happened to Ade. Leg, back, bug hes become the magical mystery injury man.

    Chelsea must really be laughing.

    • Ramos28 says:

Mate, I can applaud the fact that you PRETEND to sound as if you know what your talking about…but I wouldn’t give up your day job just yet, eh!

      • Harry hater says:

Ramos you know NOTHING!!! Swanspur you are spot on mate, every time we take the lead he makes a negative sub and prays we escape with a draw at best as he has done all season!!! We all know Livermore ain’t good enough but it seems his name is first on the team sheet every week when he’s fit…. I said on here last Sunday before the saints game that we would take the lead and be in total control up til the point of AVB making a sub and the holding on for what we’ve got and he did! That’s a fact Ramos!!!!! We got lucky against man utd and Southampton and in a sense QPR and last night it run out!

        • Bobbles says:

To be fair (difficult I know, when it comes to Livermore), but surely he can only expect to get minutes until Scotty P returns.

Bloody hope so anyway – him and Townsend can do one.

        • Tom says:

‘first on the team sheet every week when he’s fit’

          er….

no. Sorry old bean, but that statement sums up your poorly educated sentiment.

You are wrong. It happens. Sorry.

        • Harry hater says:

Tom he played every game at the start of the season up til his injury you melt!!!! Now bore someone else with your big words!!!

        • LosLorenzo says:

Yes. Pure luck that we take the lead in almost every game we play. The man doesn’t have a clue. Pure luck.

        • essexian76 says:

Do actually consider your opinions before posting the damned things? How on earth is Livermore first on the team sheet? He played because Dembele was injured, Sandro and Hudd are knackered and Parker’s out long term-For heavens sake, get a grip on this witch-hunt against the bloke. He played well before being forced off-or do you only see what suits your agenda? It was the first time Livermore played in a freeer role-without being shackled, which is to break up play and give it-because there were no other creative mids to fill the role-do try watchning in future-It’s possible you may learn something=then again, perhaps not!

      • LLL says:

I think most of his points are salient. Rather than just scoffing knowingly, why not tell us what you know?

    • Jamie says:

“When will he realise that Defoe need more help to become effective.”
And which of our many available strikers would you have him partner? Ade’s been out.
Which of our other midfielders would you have come on instead of Livermore?..accepting Huddlestone can’t last a game and Sandro has played every minute this season.
I get people’s complaints…but nobody is suggesting an alternative. I’m sure AVB would love to bring on Parker, or Dembele..but these are the available players we have.

      • LLL says:

And which of our many available strikers would you have him partner? Ade’s been out.

Sorry, that’s bullshot and it’s a creeping myth that needs to be stubbed out right away. Whatever the causes of Adebayor’s current malaise (tummy ache? arse ache? you choose), he has mostly been on the bench. He was also fit enough to fly away and score in Africa. AVB himself described his omission from the first team as being down to Defoe’s good form and nothing else. So please stop fabricating excuses for him. Adebayor’s non-appearance in the starting line up has been down to AVB.

        • MysteriousStranger says:

When he first arrived Adebayor was unfit. He then did get a little game time. Then he had a back injury and then an upset stomach. That has been the official line. Yes, the latter two are indeed the most common, hard to disprove excuses if someone wants a duvet day, instead of going out to work. But that is not the point you are making is it.

          Here’s your “point”.

Adebayor’s non appearances in the starting line up are down to AVB?

Of course they are. AVB’s fault. AVB’s fault he didn’t want to play an unfit player through injury or otherwise.

        • LLL says:

          Come on.

          1. Who said Adebayor was unfit at the beginning of the season? Nobody said it. It was assumed by some people, yourself for instance, but nobody has said he was unfit.

          2. AVB has publicly explained Adebayor’s non-starting presence in the team as being down to his own preference to play 1 striker and specifically for that striker to be Defoe, because of his good form. That’s from the horses mouth. So why do you insist that he wasn’t played because of injury / unfitness? Like I said, this is pure bullshot that suits your own narrative but doesn’t reflect any of the facts.

        • MysteriousStranger says:

          http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/norwich-v-tottenham-team-news-1407860

Yep, bad AVB. Face facts LLL. It’s timelined there to make a simpleton even understand it, so I’m sure an intelligent bloke like you will accept that from the End of August until now, Adebayor has not regularly been available.

Yes, all those press reports at regular intervals suit my narrative.

The fact AVB may have gone with/stuck with Defoe on occasion does not make your argument stick, because your argument is nothing but overdramatised rubbish.

        • LLL says:

It’s strange because I swear I saw him sat on the bench fairly regularly through that period. In fact, I even saw him playing for a couple of 10 minute slots. I swear I did. I also read that he jetted off to Africa and popped in the all important goal that takes Togo to the ANC. Was this fabrication too?

The fact AVB may have gone with/stuck with Defoe on occasion does not make your argument stick, because your argument is nothing but overdramatised rubbish.

On occasion? You mean: on every occasion. Which is the entire crux of my ‘argument’. Even when, on a number of occasions, AVB was presented with a demonstrably better for the formation he chooses to play, he’s opted to play Defoe instead. And he has publicly defended this not with the excuses of injuries or unfitness that you are using but by explaining that he prefers Defoe. Is this over-dramatized rubbish? Or is it just a reflection of the facts?

        • LosLorenzo says:

As I remember it, AVB pointed out in the media early on that Ade hadn’t had a pre-season, and needed a bit of time to catch up to the rest of the squad in terms of fitness. He referred specifically to a special regime he was put on to achieve this. He ALSO said JD was being picked on merit. It is not difficult to conceive that, knowing he only had one completely fit striker, he said what he did about Defoe in order to build up the confidence of the striker which circumstance dictated he had to pick no matter what.

And a couple weeks into the season the media reported Ade had a ham string problem. MS did not make this up to suit his narrative, although we can’t rule out the media making it up, as they are wont to do.

Ade has also been reported to have had back and stomach problems latterly. And he has very little game time. If this is all true (we know the game time thing is true), how can we believe that he’s fit to play for 90 minutes?

I would say that YOU are denying the obvious explanation to suit your narrative. These may not be provable facts, but I’d say your claim that all these various reports are BS, is pure conjecture. Do you really believe that the same media who were doing everything in their power to make AVB look like a numpty two months ago, are now suddenly fabricating stories to deflect criticism from his striker selection?

        • MysteriousStranger says:

He’s not been fully fit and regularly available for us at all times as you seem to assert. Perhaps the club were happy for him to go and get some match time for Togo to aid his fitness levels.

But AVB has not exactly gone with Defoe on every occasion thorughout the timelined period, because Adebayor has not been available to him on every occasion, has he? No. The End.

        • LLL says:

As I remember it, AVB pointed out in the media early on that Ade hadn’t had a pre-season, and needed a bit of time to catch up to the rest of the squad in terms of fitness.

‘As you remember it’ doesn’t really cut it much, does it? I don’t remember it, but that’s not much of an argument either.

He referred specifically to a special regime he was put on to achieve this.

          He did??

He ALSO said JD was being picked on merit. It is not difficult to conceive that, knowing he only had one completely fit striker, he said what he did about Defoe in order to build up the confidence of the striker which circumstance dictated he had to pick no matter what.

Interesting ‘theory’. Conversely, does this not put a dampener on the injured players confidence who is being told he’s out of the team regardless of his phantom injuries, because of ‘merit’?

how can we believe that he’s fit to play for 90 minutes?

So why not get him some game time in a cup game or even start him for one of the ‘soft’ home games. He can always be subbed off if he tires. Right?

I would say that YOU are denying the obvious explanation to suit your narrative.

Poppycock. The ‘obvious’ explanation is based on assumption. I’m using the explanation that has come from AVB – and the only one he’s given.

These may not be provable facts, but I’d say your claim that all these various reports are BS, is pure conjecture.

I didn’t say that he hasn’t been injured at all, I argued that he hasn’t been injured all the time, which is, demonstrably a FACT!

Do you really believe that the same media who were doing everything in their power to make AVB look like a numpty two months ago, are now suddenly fabricating stories to deflect criticism from his striker selection?

          Erm. No. What?!?

        • LLL says:

But AVB has not exactly gone with Defoe on every occasion thorughout the timelined period, because Adebayor has not been available to him on every occasion, has he? No. The End.

Yes, AVB has exactly gone with Defoe on every occasion – regardless of whether he had another option or not. Sometimes Adebayor was eligible. AVB chose to ignore this option when it was available and play Defoe. He then explained that this was because he preferred Defoe. Why is it so difficult for you to accept this?

        • MysteriousStranger says:

You’re clearly the one who fails to understand.

You make statements suggesting Adebayor could have played, and denied the injuries, tried to make out nobosy said so, which again, you were proved wrong on. Then when I prove your assertions wrong, you try to talk your argument into somehow being right.

Defoe was for the majority of the time being picked because the manager had little other choice in the matter. But this is something which you asserted to be the fault of the manager when you made this blanket statement.

Adebayor’s non-appearance in the starting line up has been down to AVB.

No go and hide under yours.

        • LLL says:

Wtf? I know I’m argumentative, but this blindness to simple facts in order to preserve your argument is just sheer lunacy!

You make statements suggesting Adebayor could have played,

YES! Because he could have played. At times! Are you denying this???

and denied the injuries, tried to make out nobosy said so, which again, you were proved wrong on.

No. I denied he was injured at the start of the season – because he wasn’t. I also denied that he has been injured throughout – because he hasn’t been. Why is this reading to you as me saying ‘he hasn’t ever been injured’???? Can I just repeat, in an obviously pointless attempt at clarity: ‘Although Adebayor has had some apparent niggles, he has also at times been available for the first team squad’

Defoe was for the majority of the time being picked because the manager had little other choice in the matter.

At no point have I argued otherwise.

But this is something which you asserted to be the fault of the manager when you made this blanket statement.

Incorrect. If Adebayor is injured or not in the squad because of a tummy ache then I don’t expect AVB to be able to have him play. Erm. Obviously?!?! However, both of us know, even though only one of us is able to accept it, that there have been times when Adebayor has been eligible to play and AVB has chosen against it. AND. AVB has said that is because he prefers Defoe. Why is this even a debate anymore?!? I’m just repeating the exact same thing and you are countering with what you want to believe I’ve said instead.

No go and hide under yours.
          :hae:

        • MysteriousStranger says:

I’ve given you link after link. I suggest you learn to open them and stop bolding up everything.

At the start of the season Adebayor was at Man City. In the first week of September he was unfit. You denied it. You then said he wasn’t injured.

Now stop trying to twist every single strand, read back what you wrote and asserted, and what I wrote and countered your statements with.

You have made out the injury thing to be some kind of bullshit. It has not been. On many occasions Adebayor has not been available. He is at least in the squad for the weekend. Dembele is injured. Hope you noticed that, as you seem to be very fucking selective with what you see and what you don’t.

        • LLL says:

Come on, does this really have to go this long?

The first week of September Ade was on the bench and came on against Norwich, then there was a 2 week break for internationals, during which he played the full 90 minuted for Togo on 8th September. He was then back on the bench for our next fixture against Reading on the 16th September. No amount of clicking on a Daily Mail piece with no quotes is going to be able to refute these facts.

You have made out the injury thing to be some kind of bullshit.

No. You have made out that I have made out the injury thing is some kind of bullshit. Two quite different things.

On many occasions Adebayor has not been available.

Uh-huh. Right with you. Never disputed this.

He is at least in the squad for the weekend.

He is? Well, I shan’t get too excited. He’s been in the squad on a number of occasions, but AVB seems to prefer Defoe. At least, that’s what he’s said.

        • Jamie says:

I actually don’t think AVB has an agenda with Ade or Defoe. Whoever is the most in form and fit will play.
I think you’re both right in parts. Ade has had very limited times when he was near enough to match fit. At that times, Defoe was playing very well, and it’s not AVB’s policy to just hand the shirt back by right.
You either agree with that or you don’t. I’d love to see Ade back, most fans probably would. But I also accept that most managers who win elite silverware do so by an ethos that no player is un-dropable. By example, why did Fergusson spend £24m on RVP with so many good strikers? Because Rooney was getting to big for his boots.
Recently Defoe has dropped off so Ade would have been rotated back in by now had he stayed fit. Then it’s up to him to be at it every game and keep the shirt. Call me an AVB lover, happy clapper or what have you, but I actually quite like AVBs principles on this – even though I don’t always agree with his selections.
As for the suggestion that I’m fabricating excuses on behalf of AVB…it’s probably time I came clean.
          I confess.
I am working for AVB as an undercover spin doctor.
I also shot JFK and framed Roger Rabbit.

        • LLL says:

To clarify for the 100th time, if Adebayor is not on the squad sheet, I don’t expect AVB to somehow pick him. I’m not that mental. My argument (account of factual history?) that AVB has chosen to play Defoe over Adebayor relates solely to those times when he indeed had that choice available to him.

And at no point did I say that his injury niggles were made-up. I don’t even know why I or anyone else would think that. Although now there are murmurings that his dicky tummy etc may be cover for a ‘bit of a strop’, I have no idea so can’t comment and won’t speculate. Although, knowing Ade’s form at other clubs, I’d say it is a brave and possibly foolhardy AVB who continues to have him stewing on the bench.

        • Astromesmo says:

Jamie, will you go away with your sensible common sense. Your wanton talk of even-handedness and fair play will not allow people to be hung by their gonads from lamp-posts in the high rd… We want public floggings and people burned on chick-king spit roasts.

Thank you, Great points well made as always.

    • Jim says:

How can you blame Livermore? He didn’t do anything wrong AT ALL during the first half, and he didn’t even play the second half? If anything, you should blame Lloris for the rebound, or Tom Huddlestone for not doing watching out for his man Jackson.

      • LLL says:

Agree, I think Livermore played fine last night and was surprised to see him come off at half time. The problems were coming in our lack of bite, with Bale the only threat on the pitch, not from the midfield, which was more than up to the challenge posed by the Norwich reserves.

      • jayspurs says:

Also agree, Livermore looked absolutely fine in that first half. He’s something of a scapegoat for us Spurs fans (see also Huddlestone and Gallas) but he played pretty well. Also, why is Huddlestone constantly having to drop deep into his own box to try to pick up attackers our defence should presumably be picking up? He’s not really cut out for it but I feel like he’s having a go because of the poor positioning/laziness of others. Walker always seems notably absent on these occasions…

        • LLL says:

Huddlestone has been playing so deep – as you say, sometimes even deeper than the back 4 – that I can only assume this is an instruction of sorts. I guess it is supposed to be the ‘quarter back’ role, or perhaps he is seen as a sweeper. Really I think his best place is receiving and playing the ball in midfield and he should be kept away from defensive duties for the most part.

    • nobby nobbs says:

What looking like a white wearing c–t. He was fucking invisible all game and re appeared out of the ether to miss a penalty.

      • MysteriousStranger says:

You’ve watched Spurs before have you? Defoe turned missing penalties in the Lillywhite into an art form. Yet he’s still “a Yiddo”, apparently.

The last time we won a penalty shoot out was against Peterborough in 1994. As a club we have made the “penalty kick” look anything but one in the oft phrased sense.

But you know, short memories and all that. We hadn’t beaten Man United at Old Trafford since 1989 til Dempsey helped send us in that direction by slotting home the neccessary 3rd goal – but a penalty miss against Norwich and it’s the end of the world. A penalty that probably shouldn’t have been awarded at that.

        • LLL says:

I personally don’t really care about his penalty miss. As you say, it was a dubious call anyway. But the fact that some of our other players 20 years ago have also been shit at penalty’s so this is something we should accept and live with is quite a strange and defeatist argument to make. We’ve been terrible at corners for a few years now. I don’t think this is something that the club should just collectively shrug its shoulders over either.

Anyway, and moreover, it’s Dempsey’s general poor play to date that bothers me more than the isolated miss.

          LLL,

I am not being defeatist. I am stating facts about our club. In context, this Dempsey witch hunt is almost as ridiculous as your campaign is against AVB.

And I’ve replied to your other comment. Once Harry moderates it, if he hasn’t done so already, you might slow your argumentative nature down. :winke:

I don’t have a campaign against AVB any more than you have a campaign for him. Oh. Hang about.

My campaign is for patience under the circumstances.

        • LLL says:

Well, I don’t have a ‘campaign’ against AVB. I have given him credit where I’ve felt it’s due and overall kept an open, if admittedly somewhat pessimistic, outlook about him.

There have been mitigating factors as there always are for all managers. The football to date has been mostly underwhelming, rarely exciting, sometimes excruciating. The results in cup competitions have been sub-par, the results in the league have been OK – the league standing is very good but you need to take into consideration the actual fixtures we’ve played. I.e. nobody except Chelsea and Utd.

The next run of fixtures should go some way to showing whether my reserved pessimism, or your tempered optimism is more grounded in reality. I hope you are right, I most honestly do!

It might seem strange but I wold suggest that the best performing Senior Pro , possibly a goalscorer on the night, possibly someone who has just become a new dad and is on cloud 9.
You know then we might have actually scored.
          Dempsey was shite all night.

      • Did you feel the same when he scored against Manchester United…

Wowee. One goal in how many? He’s not all that. At all. Similar to but not a patch on Keane, who we booted out at this age, when he started playing like a Dempsey.
Regarding above argument I have to say, I can remember Ade being considered unfit and in need of a specific pre-season purge. AVB recently stated he’d been unavailable for 6, in for a while, then available for 2. Being fit enough to take your place on the bench – being one of only two strikers at the club… – doesn’t mean you’re fit enough to start. AVB’s policy is good albeit somewhat frustrating. It rids the ‘favorites’ culture which, over time, will prove a significant plus. However, we should’ve won this game. Norwich B Team? And for those who think that winning a bloody trophy isn’t what it’s all about… Not to mention how tight things are. It could be just two points separating 5th from 8th which could mean missing out on Europe altogether. Not forgetting the trophy. 5 games. First being Norwich B Team. Dempsey shouldn’t even be here, nevermind taking penalties. Agree Bale should’ve. And we should’ve won. Bad Andre.
