A new sponsorship deal to cause quite a stir

It probably won’t come as too much of a shock to learn that Spurs have just tied up a new deal for cup shirt sponsorship next year. The previous Investec deal expired this summer and Daniel Levy would have been as keen as anyone to ensure this lucrative income stream was maintained.

Tottenham announced on the clubs website today that the famous ‘lilywhite’ shirt will have the name of AIA Group (AIA) emblazoned across it during next seasons various cup campaigns. The club had the following to say on the matter:

“We are delighted to welcome AIA, one of the world’s leading life insurers, as a Tottenham Hotspur Partner. AIA has a unique and long history in Asia, and today is a high-growth Company and a clear market leader in their field. “

The emphasis on brand development has been stark in recent times, and reaching out to the rapidly expanding Asia-Pacific market would appear a prudent move by the club.

I am all for balancing football with ever more necessary financial considerations, but I think the club are really taking it too far with this one. Red is a colour associated with evil, the devil and Arsenal football club. It is certainly not something I want anywhere near my beloved Spurs. Maybe my belief that the horrific Thomson kits were a one off was misguided.

See what you think of the kits below. Am I overreacting?
