Welsh International, Mel Hopkins was signed by Spurs in 1952. He played 219 times for the Lilywhites before being flogged to Brighton for eight grand.
Mel was joined at Albion by Bobby Smith of course.
Mel was a giant of a man, a fleet of foot and a hard tackling full back who was greatly admired, once described as, ‘a big honest centre half with a nose any boxer would have been proud of..’ Mel was also held in high regard for his much valued coaching with schools in Brighton when he finished playing.
HH hears via the highly esteemed ODM, that Mel is currently being treated for non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
He’s undertaking a course of chemotherapy and whilst he’s pretty frail at the moment, the prognosis is good so hopefully he’ll make a full recovery.
Best wishes from all us Spurs fans online, to you and yours, Mel.
