Everton are reportedly ‘showing an interest’ in signing Sporting CP right-back Georgios Vagiannidis, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.
The Toffees actually wanted to sign the 24-year-old last summer before he chose to join the Portuguese giants instead, giving them a long-standing interest in the player.
Sporting signed Vagiannidis after being impressed by his performances for Greek club Panathinaikos, but he has struggled to cement a regular starting spot in Lisbon.
The Greek defender started only 16 matches across all competitions this term, registering seven assists and keeping three clean sheets during that period.
Vagiannidis did contribute to Sporting finishing second in the Liga Portugal, but his inability to break into Rui Borges’ starting line-up has raised doubts about his future at the club.
Despite Vagiannidis holding a contract that runs until 2030, Sporting are open to selling him this summer and are prepared to accept around £9m for his services.
Everton have enquired about the details of finalising a deal but have not yet launched a formal proposal for the attack-minded right-back.
Spanish side Villarreal are also in the race and have already made contact with Sporting to enquire about the player’s availability this window.
Vagiannidis is described as a right-footed player who is quick, good in the air, capable of linking up play, able to dribble past defenders in tight areas, and efficient defensively.
Everton have experienced right-back problems in recent seasons, with centre-back Jake O’Brien filling in as cover in that position rather than playing in his natural role.
The Greek international is said to be keen to remain at Sporting and fight for his place, though he may be open to a move to a competitive league such as the Premier League.
Vagiannidis is approaching what should be his peak years as a professional, and a fee of around £9m could represent strong value if Everton decide to make a firm offer.
