World No 3 Iga Swiatek has been eliminated from the French Open after a straight-sets defeat to Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round.
Kostyuk produced a dominant display to knock out the highly-ranked Swiatek, winning the match 7-5 6-1.
The result represents a significant shock at the tournament, given Swiatek’s standing as world No 3 heading into the clash.
Kostyuk took the opening set in a tight contest, edging through 7-5 to gain a crucial foothold in the match.
The second set proved far more straightforward for Kostyuk, who dominated proceedings to close out the victory 6-1.
Swiatek, ranked third in the world, was unable to find her best form as Kostyuk grew increasingly influential throughout the contest.
The margin of victory in the second set underlined just how completely Kostyuk controlled the latter stages of the match.
Swiatek’s exit at the fourth round stage will be seen as one of the more surprising results of this year’s French Open tournament.
Kostyuk’s performance was commanding across both sets, with the scoreline reflecting her clear superiority on the day.
The victory sends Kostyuk through to the next round of the French Open, ending Swiatek’s participation in the tournament entirely.
