Arsenal and Chelsea are both reportedly eyeing a move to sign Atalanta youngster Honest Ahanor, according to TEAMtalk.

The 18-year-old came through Genoa’s youth system before making his first-team debut and subsequently joining Atalanta last summer as a promising defensive prospect.

Ahanor operated as a rotational option at New Balance Arena last season but still managed to demonstrate flashes of genuine quality throughout the campaign.

Across 19 starts in all competitions, he scored one goal and contributed to six clean sheets, a respectable return for a teenager finding his feet in Serie A.

His performances at club level earned him international recognition, with Ahanor already having made his debut for the Italian national team.

Chelsea have been monitoring his development extensively and hold a strong interest in securing the versatile defender this transfer window.

Arsenal and Manchester City have also been keeping a close eye on Ahanor, meaning three of England’s biggest clubs are tracking the teenager simultaneously.

Brighton and Hove Albion have moved quickest, launching a formal £34 million proposal, which Atalanta swiftly rejected as insufficient for one of their prized assets.

Atalanta have no intention of selling Ahanor this summer, particularly after already cashing in on Ederson and Marco Palestra during the current transfer window.

With his contract running until 2028 and his Transfermarkt valuation sitting at around £26 million, Atalanta hold a strong negotiating position and are in no rush to sell.

Ahanor is a left-footed defender capable of playing both centre-back and left-back, giving potential suitors genuine positional flexibility across the defensive line.

Arsenal’s need for Ahanor appears questionable given they already possess Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Piero Hincapie providing cover on the left side of defence.

Chelsea’s interest carries more logic, with newly appointed manager Xabi Alonso understood to be keen on strengthening the backline during this summer’s recruitment drive.

The Blues have also been heavily linked with Maxence Lacroix, suggesting Alonso is prioritising defensive reinforcements as he looks to stamp his authority on the squad.

Whether Arsenal or Chelsea ultimately submit a concrete bid for Ahanor remains to be seen, but competition for his signature is clearly building fast.
