Chelsea have held talks over signing Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, with the Brazilian valued at £130m and unsettled in the Spanish capital.

The Blues finished ninth in the Premier League this season, leaving them without European football and in desperate need of a major rebuild under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

Alonso’s appointment represents an exciting new direction, but the squad around him requires significant investment to mount a genuine challenge at the top of the division.

Chelsea’s attacking output has been a major concern, with a lack of sharpness and profligacy in offensive phases making it difficult to close the gap on the Premier League’s leading clubs.

Cole Palmer will be expected to return to his best, but the club appear to be targeting a world-class forward to play alongside him and elevate the entire attacking unit.

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are among a growing list of Premier League clubs to have been in contact with Vinicius Junior’s representatives, with the forward one year from the end of his contract.

Manchester United are said to be leading the race for the Real Madrid star, making it critical that Chelsea act swiftly and decisively if they are to win the transfer battle.

Vinicius Junior scored 16 goals and contributed five assists in La Liga this season, while also registering five goals and five assists in the Champions League, taking his total across all competitions to 22 goals and 14 assists.

He has now surpassed the 20-goal mark in each of his last five campaigns, with Sky Sports analyst Pythagoras in Boots describing him as “generational” and “comparable to great wingers of other generations.”

The 35-year-old retired Eden Hazard, who scored 110 goals and provided 88 assists across 352 Chelsea appearances, remains the benchmark for wide forwards at the club, and Vinicius Junior has the potential to reach similar heights at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s lack of European football could complicate any pursuit of Vinicius Junior, but the presence of Alonso represents a significant attraction, given the coach and forward’s shared history.

Alonso himself is considered a trump card in the transfer negotiations, and Vinicius has acknowledged that he “learned a lot” during their time together, suggesting a reunion could be mutually beneficial.

Complications elsewhere in the squad also demand attention, with Enzo Fernandez reported to want to leave and Chelsea placing a £120m asking price on the midfielder, while Marc Cucurella is said to be exploring a return to Spain.
