Chelsea have made formal contact with Juventus over the potential transfer of Italian fullback Andrea Cambiaso to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The approach follows a disappointing 2025-26 season for Chelsea, with the club now looking to strengthen several key areas of their squad.
Reinforcing the left-back position has become a clear priority, a need made more urgent by Marc Cucurella’s permanent departure to Real Madrid.
Chelsea have already secured an agreement to sign versatile Argentine starlet Valentin Barco from Strasbourg, though his long-term position remains uncertain after spending much of last season in midfield.
With Barco’s role unclear, Chelsea are now pursuing natural left-back options, and reports via Football Talk indicate Xabi Alonso has specifically identified Cambiaso as a replacement for Cucurella.
According to Sportmediaset, Chelsea have now escalated their efforts by making initial contact with Juventus to discuss a possible summer transfer.
Juventus have placed a £34m valuation on the Italian international as they look to make sales in order to comply with UEFA financial regulations.
However, a significant valuation gap exists, with Chelsea currently willing to offer only £21m, with bonuses that could potentially raise the deal to £25m.
One of Cambiaso’s most appealing qualities is his ability to use both feet effectively, allowing him to operate comfortably on either flank across a variety of tactical systems.
While 79 of his appearances for Juventus have come on the left flank, he has also shown he can perform just as effectively on the opposite side of defence.
Former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has previously described Cambiaso as a “technically very good” player, underlining why the fullback has attracted significant Premier League attention.
AC Milan legend Mauro Tassotti has drawn an even loftier comparison, suggesting Cambiaso’s qualities are “similar to Paolo Maldini,” highlighting the player’s elite potential.
With Alonso expected to rotate between a back four and a back three at Chelsea next season, Cambiaso’s tactical versatility makes him an ideal fit for the wing-back role.
Jorrel Hato is widely expected to serve as Chelsea’s first-choice left-back, but Cambiaso would provide strong competition while also offering additional flexibility across the defensive line.
