Chelsea have reportedly received a significant boost in their long-running pursuit of Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri this summer transfer window.

According to Caught Offside, Arsenal are now open to selling the young midfielder despite his contract running until 2030.

The Gunners are said to be willing to accept a fee of around £40m for the highly-rated England under-21 international.

Nwaneri famously made his Arsenal first-team debut at just 15 years old after coming through the club’s Hale End academy.

He enjoyed a more prominent role during the 2024/25 season, playing regularly for a couple of months while Bukayo Saka was sidelined through injury.

However, Nwaneri largely struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up on a consistent basis throughout the campaign.

In January, Arteta decided to send him on loan to Olympique de Marseille to give him the regular playing time needed to develop his career.

The move to Stade Velodrome failed to spark the breakthrough many had hoped for, with Nwaneri managing just three goal contributions in four starts across all competitions.

Chelsea have held a long-standing interest in Nwaneri and have previously attempted to sign him on two separate occasions, making this development a significant boost for the Blues.

The West London club will face fierce competition for his signature, however, with Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and AC Milan all reportedly keen on securing his services.

Chelsea are preparing for a fresh rebuild under the guidance of Xabi Alonso following what has been a difficult season for the club.

Cole Palmer currently stands as the only recognised number ten option in the Chelsea squad, though he was hampered by fitness problems throughout the campaign.

Nwaneri is a creative midfielder by nature but can also provide cover on the right flank, and is comfortable with both feet despite being naturally left-footed.

His versatility and high potential could make him a shrewd long-term acquisition for Chelsea as Alonso looks to reshape the squad this summer.

Whether Chelsea ultimately make a concrete move to bring the Arsenal youngster to Stamford Bridge before the transfer window closes remains to be seen.
