Liverpool are reportedly in contention to re-sign former striker Darwin Nunez, with early talks already held over a potential return to Anfield.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Nunez joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in a £46m deal last summer before agreeing to terminate his contract early.
The Uruguayan forward is now available, and a number of European clubs have been sounded out about his availability this transfer window.
Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur are among the sides contacted, with Liverpool described as being “very much in the mix.”
New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is understood to be a significant admirer of Nunez, having been particularly impressed by the striker’s work rate and pressing ability.
Iraola replaced Arne Slot at Anfield following a difficult season that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League, scraping into Champions League qualification.
The new boss has already spoken about the summer, saying: “I think there is still work to do, like normally in every club in this moment of the season.”
He added: “But right now, for me the thing is to value especially the players that we have right now in the squad. For me, and I will tell them, [they] are all new signings.”
Iraola continued: “For me, you are all new signings and I think we have a lot of quality in our squad, and [I’m] really looking forward to working with them.”
Bringing in a forward has become more pressing after Hugo Ekitike was ruled out for an extended spell, leaving Liverpool short of attacking options heading into next season.
Ally McCoist previously praised Nunez after a key moment in a Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain during the 2024-25 season.
McCoist said: “Unbelievable football from Darwin Nunez, because nine times out of ten he hits this. He doesn’t, he takes the right option.”
The pundit added: “Watch Nunez, usually he pulls the trigger there, it looks a simple pass and it is but it’s there to hit first time, that’s the secret of it.”
Despite that praise, Nunez managed just five goals in 30 Premier League appearances during his final season at Anfield, before Slot chose to move him on.
The 26-year-old, who has earned 38 caps for Uruguay, remains a divisive figure among supporters who saw flashes of brilliance mixed with inconsistency throughout his Liverpool career.
With Ibrahima Konate also set to join Real Madrid, Liverpool face a busy summer addressing multiple positions across the squad before the new campaign begins.
