Manchester United are preparing to submit a formal offer to sign Mamadou Sangaré from Lens this summer, according to French journalist Sébastien Denis.
The 23-year-old midfielder has attracted widespread attention after an outstanding debut season in Ligue 1, with over ten clubs said to be monitoring his situation.
Lens have placed a £34m valuation on the Malian international, though Denis suggests that figure could rise even higher as the summer transfer window progresses.
United appear determined to lead the race, with Denis reporting the Red Devils are ready to move ahead of their rivals by lodging a formal offer for Sangaré.
The midfielder’s journey to one of European football’s most coveted midfield positions is a remarkable story of persistence and development across several loan spells.
Sangaré was originally identified by Red Bull Salzburg while playing for Yeelen Olympique in the Malian Première Division, joining the Austrian club’s system in 2020.
He spent time on loan at FC Liefering, Grazer AK 1902, Zulte Waregem and TSV Hartberg before completing a permanent move to Rapid Wien in the summer of 2024.
At Rapid Wien, Sangaré made 50 appearances for the 32-time Austrian champions, producing the kind of consistent performances that convinced Lens to move for him last summer.
He went on to feature in 39 matches across all competitions for Lens under manager Pierre Sage during the recently concluded Ligue 1 season.
His performances earned him a place in Ligue 1’s team of the season, and he also won the 2026 Marc-Vivien Foé Award, joining the likes of Achraf Hakimi and Victor Osimhen among its previous recipients.
The award is presented annually to the best African player in Ligue 1, and Sangaré’s ball-winning ability was central to his recognition throughout the campaign.
No player in the French top flight made more successful tackles than Sangaré’s tally of 52, while he ranked 12th in the division for interceptions last season.
According to FOTMOB, he averaged an extraordinary 7.35 tackles per game, with an 86.2% pass completion rate and a 56.1% success rate on dribbles underlining his well-rounded profile.
Sangaré also represented Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations, appearing in all five of his country’s matches and demonstrating his defensive discipline and relentless work rate on the international stage.
