Glasgow Rangers are continuing to build their squad this summer, with Derek McInnes pushing to add further reinforcements ahead of the new Scottish Premiership campaign.

The Ibrox club have already secured the arrivals of Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie as part of their summer recruitment drive.

Rangers are also closing in on a loan deal for Ben Godfrey, a 28-year-old former England international defender, with Serie A side Atalanta set to sanction a season-long move including an option to buy.

Godfrey has spent recent seasons on loan at Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, and Brondby, though none of those clubs elected to pursue a permanent transfer for the defender.

His availability record raises genuine concerns, as he has not surpassed 16 appearances in all competitions in any season since the 2021/22 campaign.

During his stint at Brondby, Godfrey lost 61% of his ground duels and made two errors that led directly to shots or penalties, casting doubt over his reliability at the back.

However, Rangers may be working on an addition that carries even greater potential, with reports from Italy linking the club to Palermo goalkeeper Sebastiano Desplanches.

According to those reports, Rangers and English Championship side Norwich City, managed by Philippe Clement, have both made contact with Palermo to discuss a possible deal for the 23-year-old stopper.

Several Italian clubs are also said to be monitoring Desplanches, though no asking price from the Serie B side has been disclosed at this stage.

Desplanches impressed on loan at Pescara in Serie B during the 2025/26 season, recording 0.08 goals prevented per 90 and 1.03 sweeping actions per 90, figures that compare favourably to current Rangers number one Jack Butland.

Butland made seven errors leading to shots or goals in the Scottish Premiership last season, while Desplanches made just three such mistakes across his loan spell at Pescara.

The young Italian also demonstrated his quality on the international stage, keeping two clean sheets and saving a penalty across three appearances at the U21 European Championship.

A hamstring injury disrupted the end of his season, but Desplanches is expected to be fit for pre-season and available to compete for the number one shirt at Ibrox.

His statistics suggest he could challenge Butland effectively, with his sweeping ability and shot-stopping consistency potentially making him the superior option between the sticks.

By contrast, Godfrey’s persistent struggles across multiple loan spells make it difficult to predict whether he can rediscover his best form in Glasgow.

If Rangers can agree a fee with Palermo, Desplanches could prove to be the shrewder and more impactful piece of business in this summer window.
