Tottenham Hotspur are showing serious interest in signing Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo this summer, according to Dutch outlet Soccer News.
Talks have already begun behind the scenes, with Spurs holding discussions with both Liverpool and the player’s representatives in an effort to push the deal forward.
Gakpo, who is 27 years old, joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in 2023 and has since won a Premier League title and a Carabao Cup trophy at Anfield.
The Dutch international endured an inconsistent campaign this season, contributing nine goals and six assists across 52 appearances in all competitions.
Despite his dip in form, manager Arne Slot continued to rely on Gakpo regularly throughout the season due to fitness problems suffered by Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.
Following Slot’s departure from Liverpool, Soccer News report that Gakpo is now open to seeking a new challenge and is receptive to the prospect of joining Tottenham.
Gakpo remains contracted at Liverpool until 2030, and Transfermarkt values him at around £52m, meaning the Reds will demand significant compensation before agreeing to any sale.
The 6ft 4in left-winger is a right-footed forward who is quick, strong, technically capable, and able to beat defenders in tight spaces, with Jurgen Klopp previously using him as a false nine.
Tottenham’s current options on the left wing are limited, with Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert the only specialist choices, and Odobert currently sidelined with a serious knee injury.
Randal Kolo Muani can also provide cover on the left flank, but the Frenchman is expected to return to PSG when his loan expires, further thinning Spurs’ attacking depth.
Mathys Tel, while promising, is considered too young and inexperienced at this stage to shoulder the attacking burden Tottenham require for their ambitions.
Gakpo also retains his standing at international level, having secured a place in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for this summer’s World Cup.
At 27, the forward is arguably entering the peak years of his career, making him an attractive and proven Premier League option for any club looking to strengthen this transfer window.
Whether Tottenham can ultimately convince both Liverpool and Gakpo to complete the deal remains to be seen as the summer window progresses.
