West Bromwich Albion are pushing to strengthen their attack this summer after a disappointing Championship campaign in 2025/26.
The Baggies scored just 48 goals in 46 league games, failing to find the net in three of their final six matches under manager James Morrison.
According to the Express and Star, West Brom are hopeful of completing a deal to sign Falkirk centre-forward Barney Stewart during the summer transfer window.
The club are reported to be confident they can win the race for the 22-year-old’s signature, beating off competition from Championship rivals Watford and Scottish giants Celtic.
Stewart claimed the SFWA Young Player of the Season award after an impressive campaign, making him one of the most sought-after young strikers in Scottish football.
The Baggies are also closing in on a separate deal to sign Chelsea attacking midfielder Jimmy-Jay Morgan for a fee of £1.3m, following his loan spell at Peterborough United in League One.
Morgan, who is 20 years old, scored 12 goals from 9.28 xG in League One last season and can operate as an attacking midfielder or second striker.
West Brom are pursuing Stewart as an addition alongside Morgan rather than instead of him, signalling serious ambition to overhaul their attacking options this summer.
The arrivals would come at a critical time, with Josh Maja and Karlan Grant both facing uncertain futures as their contracts are set to expire at the end of this month.
The club are hoping to tie both players down to new deals, but nothing is guaranteed until pen is put to paper at The Hawthorns.
Even if Maja does stay, the statistics suggest Stewart would represent a significant upgrade on the Nigerian forward in the centre-forward role.
In just 17 Scottish Premiership appearances in the second half of the season, Stewart scored 8 goals from 7.83 xG and contributed 2 assists for Falkirk.
By comparison, Maja made 40 Championship appearances for West Brom in 2025/26, scoring just 4 goals from 5.53 xG while contributing only 1 assist.
Stewart averaged 0.5 goals per game compared to Maja’s 0.1, making a compelling statistical case for the Scottish forward to lead the line at The Hawthorns.
Stewart also scored four goals in 11 appearances for Dunfermline in the Scottish Championship during the first half of the season while on loan there.
Physically, the contrast between the two strikers is also notable, with Stewart winning 4.9 duels per game and 56% of his ground duels in the Premiership.
Maja, meanwhile, won just 1.8 duels per match and lost 62% of his ground duels and 65% of his aerial battles in the Championship last season.
Aune Heggebo finished as West Brom’s top scorer with nine Championship goals, and Stewart’s arrival would create even fiercer competition for a starting berth up front.
Signing Stewart this summer could prove to be a smart and decisive piece of business by Morrison as he looks to build a more clinical and competitive West Brom side.
