Chelsea’s appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager is set to hand the Spaniard significant influence over the club’s transfer activity this summer.
Alonso is believed to be planning a massive squad rebuild across all areas of the pitch as he prepares for his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Alonso has specifically asked Chelsea to consider signing AC Milan forward Christopher Nkunku during the summer transfer window.
The French forward is expected to be available for a fee of £35 million, making him a relatively affordable option for a club of Chelsea’s resources.
Nkunku previously played for Chelsea but endured a troubled spell at Stamford Bridge, with injuries repeatedly hampering his ability to establish himself in the team.
Having moved to AC Milan, the 28-year-old has started to rediscover his best form, registering six goals and two assists during the 2025/26 season.
His versatility is considered central to why Alonso is keen on the player, with Nkunku capable of operating on either flank, through the middle, or in a number ten role.
Alonso’s offensive setup is notably fluid, with the front three given the freedom to interchange positions, meaning versatile attackers who can perform across multiple roles are essential to his system.
It was in a flexible attacking role at RB Leipzig that Nkunku produced his finest numbers, and a return to that kind of freedom under Alonso could unlock the best of him once again.
Nkunku’s work-rate without the ball, his ability to press high and cut passing lanes, combined with his pace and decision-making on the counter-attack, align closely with what Alonso demands from his forwards.
At 28 years old, he represents a cost-effective and experienced option who would offer a meaningful upgrade on most of Chelsea’s current wide attackers.
Whether the Chelsea board is willing to accommodate Alonso’s request and move for Nkunku remains to be seen as the summer window progresses.
