Arsenal are looking to strengthen their defensive options this summer, with Mikel Arteta keen to add depth to his backline during the transfer window.
The potential departure of Ben White has left a noticeable gap in Arsenal’s defensive planning, making the search for a versatile defender a priority heading into the new season.
Journalist Graeme Bailey has reported that Arsenal are keen on signing Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, who is available this summer for a fee of around £43 million.
Asencio’s future at the Bernabeu has been cast into serious doubt following Real Madrid’s acquisition of Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate during the transfer window.
With those new arrivals at Madrid, Asencio is not expected to play a significant role in Jose Mourinho’s plans at the Spanish giants next season.
The 23-year-old is a capable and technically gifted defender who can play comfortably as a centre back or on the right side of the defence.
His ability to play out from the back with long passes into the final third, combined with strong aerial qualities and accurate tackling, makes him an attractive option for several top clubs.
Despite Arsenal’s reported interest, a move to the Emirates appears unlikely given that Asencio has indicated a willingness to accept a reduced role at Real Madrid rather than leave the Spanish capital.
The player is reportedly determined to stay put in Madrid and is hopeful of winning over Mourinho, even if that means initially settling for a secondary role at the club.
Arsenal’s decision-makers may also hesitate to commit £43 million to a player whose regular game time at the Emirates could not be guaranteed given the quality already present in their defensive ranks.
Reports suggest the Gunners could instead opt to pursue a younger and more affordable alternative with a view to developing that player over time rather than paying a premium for Asencio.
The situation remains fluid heading into the heart of the summer window, with Arsenal continuing to assess their defensive targets as Arteta looks to build a squad capable of competing on all fronts.
