Chelsea have agreed a £117m deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on a permanent transfer, according to reporter David Ornstein.
The fee eclipses the previous British record of £116m that Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest to sign Elliot Anderson.
Rogers has been one of the most in-demand attackers in England over the past two seasons, having joined Villa from Middlesbrough in the 2024 winter transfer window.
Since that move, he has accumulated 60 goal contributions at club level, including 26 last campaign alone, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s brightest talents.
The 23-year-old won the 2024-25 PFA Young Player of the Year award and played a key role in Aston Villa qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in two of the last three seasons.
Rogers also shone in the Europa League, winning the Player of the Tournament after providing 8 goal contributions as Villa claimed their first major trophy since 1996.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery described Rogers as “fantastic,” a label that underlined just how highly the versatile forward is regarded within the game.
Arsenal had been strongly linked with Rogers this summer, but Chelsea have moved swiftly to beat their London rivals to his signature.
Ornstein reports that Xabi Alonso played a crucial role in convincing Rogers to choose Chelsea, with the attacker set to undergo his medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract with an option of a further year.
Both Rogers and Cole Palmer previously spent time at Manchester City’s Academy, and their reunion at Stamford Bridge is expected to reignite long-running debate over who originally owns the iconic “cold” celebration.
Palmer first used the celebration during Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Luton Town on December 30, 2023, though Rogers has also been associated with the gesture throughout his rise to prominence.
Beyond the celebration debate, questions will arise over how Alonso fits both Rogers and Palmer into the same starting lineup, particularly if the manager opts for a three-at-the-back formation given their similar qualities.
Players currently on international duty are expected to link up with the Chelsea squad for preseason in Asia next month, which should offer clearer insight into how Alonso intends to deploy his attacking options.
