Chelsea are working to secure a deal for Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, according to transfer expert David Ornstein of The Athletic.
The Blues are currently leading the race to sign the 36-year-old, who still has 12 months remaining on his existing Brentford contract.
Brentford are prepared to allow Henderson to leave for free this summer, and the player himself is open to making the move to Stamford Bridge.
Fabrizio Romano has also reported on X that two additional clubs, beyond Chelsea, are showing interest in the former Liverpool captain.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Henderson reflects a broader shift in their transfer strategy following the appointment of Xabi Alonso as head coach this summer.
Since Todd Boehly’s takeover, the club largely prioritised acquiring young talent, but inconsistent performances in recent seasons have prompted a rethink in approach.
Chelsea’s current midfield options include Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, Romeo Lavia, and Dario Essugo, following Andrey Santos’ departure to Manchester United.
However, Lavia and Essugo endured significant injury problems last term, while Enzo Fernández has been linked with a move away from the club.
Henderson brings considerable pedigree to the table, having won the Premier League, the Champions League, and several major cup competitions during his time under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
The experienced midfielder featured in 34 matches across all competitions last season, making four goal contributions, and also earned a place in England’s World Cup squad.
Alonso’s side have already brought in Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, Valentino Barco, and Geovany Quenda during the current transfer window.
Chelsea also attempted to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland this summer, with Alonso having worked with the midfielder at Bayer Leverkusen, but the Black Cats refused to sanction his departure.
Adding Henderson would provide Alonso with a seasoned, winning presence in the middle of the park as Chelsea look to mount a more credible title challenge this season.
