Chelsea are preparing to submit a formal £34 million offer to sign Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa from FC Porto this summer, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.
The move comes as Chelsea look to significantly strengthen their goalkeeping department, which has faced sustained criticism over recent seasons at Stamford Bridge.
Uncertainty surrounds the future of current stopper Filip Jørgensen, who is reportedly open to leaving the club after considering a move away during the January transfer window.
Third-choice goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina is also expected to seek regular first-team football elsewhere, four years after joining from Chicago Fire as one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers of his generation.
That would leave Robert Sánchez as the only experienced senior option remaining, though his own future is uncertain should the club secure a more established number one.
Sánchez has largely served as the Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper over the past three seasons, producing some strong displays but also drawing criticism for costly inconsistencies along the way.
Konur reports that Chelsea are preparing to submit a £34 million formal offer for Costa this summer, with the move coming at the request of newly installed head coach Xabi Alonso.
Porto, however, are unwilling to negotiate below Costa’s £52 million release clause, a stance strengthened further by the goalkeeper’s impressive showing during the World Cup, per the report.
Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have also expressed interest in signing the 6ft 2in Portuguese shot-stopper, but Konur indicates Chelsea are currently leading the race.
Costa’s form over the past campaign was exceptional, helping Porto secure a 31st Primeira Liga title while conceding just 13 goals and registering 26 clean sheets across all competitions.
The 26-year-old has firmly established himself among the best goalkeepers in Europe, combining elite reflexes with composure and an impressive passing range suited to a possession-based system.
Those attributes align closely with what Alonso demands from his squad, making Costa an ideal candidate to anchor Chelsea’s rebuilt goalkeeping setup heading into next season.
