Liverpool have been monitoring Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton for a considerable period, according to transfer journalist David Lynch.
Lynch, speaking on the Anfield Index podcast, confirmed that the Merseyside club have developed a strong relationship with the 22-year-old’s representatives over time.
Wharton has risen sharply in prominence since making the move to Selhurst Park from Blackburn Rovers, establishing himself as one of the most exciting young midfielders in English football.
The youngster has collected impressive silverware during his time at Crystal Palace, including the FA Cup, Conference League, and Community Shield.
His form at club level also brought him close to earning a place in England’s World Cup squad, though Thomas Tuchel ultimately decided against including him in his final selection.
Lynch was clear about Liverpool’s interest, saying: “What I can say again in terms of my understanding on Wharton is I know for a fact they’ve liked him for a while. It’s all about what Crystal Palace want.”
The journalist also added: “I know he’s been a long-term target, but I don’t know whether Liverpool consider him a good fit for Iraola football.”
That fitness concern is a significant factor, as Liverpool’s coaching staff under Andoni Iraola reportedly harbour doubts about whether Wharton’s profile suits their demanding high-pressing system.
Wharton is naturally a left-footed deep-lying playmaker but has also shown effectiveness in a box-to-box role, offering technical quality, threading passes between the lines, set-piece delivery, and solid defensive contributions.
Crystal Palace hold a strong negotiating position, with Wharton valued at around £60m by Transfermarkt and contracted at Selhurst Park until 2029, meaning they are under no pressure to sell cheaply.
Wharton made eight goal contributions across all competitions last season, demonstrating clear progression from his earlier Premier League appearances during the 2024/25 campaign.
Liverpool’s midfield recruitment picture is only one piece of a broader summer rebuild at Anfield, with the club also said to be prioritising additions to their attacking flanks.
The club have already moved to bring in Victor Muñoz from Osasuna as part of their wider squad-strengthening efforts across multiple positions this summer.
Whether Liverpool ultimately decide that Wharton fits Iraola’s tactical demands well enough to justify a £60m commitment remains the central question surrounding this particular transfer pursuit.
