Manchester United have held internal discussions over a move for Fenerbahce left-back Archie Brown, who has attracted significant Premier League interest this summer.
The Red Devils are understood to have made contact with intermediaries regarding a potential deal for the English defender, who is valued at £16 million.
Nottingham Forest had already tested Fenerbahce’s resolve earlier in the window, submitting a £14 million bid for Brown that was rejected by the Turkish club.
United have now emerged as serious contenders despite Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall remaining Michael Carrick’s primary target for the left-back position.
Hall is believed to be keen on a move to Old Trafford even amid reported interest from Arsenal, but Newcastle’s willingness to sell remains a significant obstacle.
Brown has carved out an impressive reputation abroad, making 87 appearances for KAA Gent before earning a transfer to Fenerbahce last summer.
The Englishman has never featured in a senior game on home soil, choosing instead to develop his game across different European leagues and environments.
He registered three goals and three assists in 25 Turkish Super Lig appearances last season, demonstrating his ability to contribute meaningfully at both ends of the pitch.
Former Gent scout Samuel Cardenas offered a glowing assessment of the defender’s attributes, highlighting his versatility across the backline as a key strength.
Cardenas said: “He initially played as a central defender and then quickly switched to the left-back position. For us, he is an option for both positions. Archie has all the qualities to succeed here: he is a complete player, fast, athletic, a solid defender, and technically very strong with dynamism and attacking impulses.”
That versatility could appeal to United, given that Luke Shaw was deployed as a centre-back on occasions last season, creating a need for a flexible backup option.
However, completing a deal may prove difficult, as Fenerbahce reportedly have little appetite to sell the player at this stage of the window.
United’s transfer activity is not limited to the left-back position, with midfield reinforcements also urgently required following Manuel Ugarte’s knee surgery sustained at the World Cup.
The club have received a boost in their pursuit of AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone, with the Red Devils said to be in pole position to secure the Frenchman’s signature.
Kone is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League, and United have maintained constant contact throughout negotiations with Roma over a potential transfer.
