Manchester United are reportedly targeting Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as Michael Carrick’s side look to further strengthen their midfield options.

The 25-year-old came through Manchester City’s youth system before making his first-team debut back in 2019, though he struggled to break into Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up.

Nmecha subsequently left the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer, joining VfL Wolfsburg where his performances caught the attention of Borussia Dortmund, who signed him in 2023.

His early spell at Signal Iduna Park was hampered by fitness issues, limiting him to a rotational role before he eventually nailed down a regular starting position last campaign.

Across 42 appearances in all competitions last season, Nmecha registered eight goal contributions, demonstrating his growing influence within the Dortmund squad.

His strong club form also helped him secure a place in Germany’s national team starting line-up, though he could not help his country progress beyond the World Cup last-32.

The Athletic report that United have already brought in Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos this summer but are still considering adding another midfielder to Carrick’s ranks.

United had been keen on Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, but that pursuit has effectively ended after the Frenchman signed a fresh contract with the Spanish giants until 2031.

With Tchouameni unavailable, United have turned their attention to alternatives, identifying Nmecha alongside Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, and Sander Berge as serious options.

Nmecha is valued at around £43m by Transfermarkt and recently signed a contract extension at Dortmund keeping him at Signal Iduna Park until 2030, meaning the German club hold strong negotiating power.

The midfielder stands at 6ft 3in and is described as a technically gifted, right-footed box-to-box player who can also provide cover in the defensive midfield position.

At 25, Nmecha is considered to be in the prime stage of his career, making him an attractive target for a United side looking to build under Carrick’s management.

However, his well-documented history of fitness problems remains a significant concern, and United will need to conduct thorough due diligence before committing to any deal.

Dortmund’s relaxed stance over a potential sale, backed by his long-term contract, means any negotiation is likely to be a prolonged and complicated process for the Old Trafford club.
