Manchester United have held talks with representatives of Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson, according to a report from Football Transfers.
The 22-year-old has been a regular fixture at Deutsche Bank Park since joining from Swedish side Malmo in 2023, making his mark in the Bundesliga over the past few years.
Larsson made five goal contributions across 34 appearances in all competitions last term, demonstrating his growing influence in Frankfurt’s midfield.
Despite his consistent club performances, the midfielder failed to secure a place in Sweden’s squad for the World Cup, which may fuel his desire for a higher-profile move.
United are believed to be searching for a third midfielder this summer to handle the demands of next season, having already secured the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
The club has qualified for the Champions League, meaning the fixture schedule will be significantly heavier, and strengthening the engine room is considered a priority.
While Manchester United ideally want a marquee name to elevate the squad’s level, they have already made contact with Larsson’s representatives over a potential transfer.
Newcastle United are also firmly in the race for the Swedish international, having identified him as a serious candidate to replace Bruno Guimarães, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.
Eddie Howe’s side have made contact with the player’s camp but are yet to submit any formal proposal, leaving the door open for United to press their advantage.
Larsson is understood to be ready to leave the Bundesliga in order to take the next step in his career, giving both clubs reason for optimism in their pursuit.
Frankfurt, however, are not prepared to sell on the cheap, with the player’s contract running until 2029 and the German club valuing him at around £43m.
Described as a box-to-box midfielder, Larsson is also comfortable in a defensive midfield role, known for his threading passes, surging runs from deep, and strong work rate without possession.
Standing at 6ft 2in, the 22-year-old is considered a player with significant long-term potential, and could represent a shrewd piece of business for United looking ahead.
However, with young midfielders Kobbie Mainoo and Andrey Santos already at the club, some will question whether United need another developing talent rather than a more experienced option in the middle of the park.
