Manchester United have reportedly held internal discussions over a potential deal to sign Fulham midfielder Sander Berge this summer transfer window.
The Norwegian international has established himself as a reliable Premier League operator since arriving at Craven Cottage, helping Fulham finish in mid-table last term.
Berge’s journey in English football began when he joined Sheffield United from KRC Genk in 2020, with the midfielder initially taking time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.
He later showed glimpses of his true qualities during a stint with Burnley in the 2023/24 campaign before making his move to Fulham permanent.
Beyond club football, Berge has cemented his status as a key figure for the Norway national team, helping his country reach the World Cup quarter-final before losing to England.
Manchester United are prioritising a midfield overhaul this summer and are reportedly considering adding a third midfielder despite already completing deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
United believe Berge can be acquired for a fee of less than £40m, though Fulham are not under immediate pressure to sell with the player’s contract running until 2029.
The 28-year-old stands at 6ft 5in and operates primarily as a defensive midfielder, though he is also comfortable in a box-to-box role, bringing physicality, aerial ability, and long-range passing to any side.
Apart from Berge, United have also registered interest in AS Roma’s Manu Kone, LOSC Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha as they assess their midfield options.
Chelsea are also tracking Kone, meaning competition for midfield targets is intensifying across the Premier League’s top clubs this window.
United’s pursuit of Joao Gomes appears to have ended, with the player reportedly close to completing a move to Aston Villa instead.
At 28, Berge is widely considered to be at the prime stage of his career, making him a potentially shrewd acquisition for a United squad looking to rebuild under new direction.
Whether Old Trafford officials will move beyond internal discussions and submit a concrete offer for Berge remains the key question as the summer transfer window progresses.
