Manchester United are weighing up a move to sign Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall this summer, according to a report from the Sun.
Hall came through Chelsea’s highly regarded Cobham Academy, the same setup that produced his Newcastle teammate Timo Livramento.
He made his competitive debut for Chelsea in a 5-1 FA Cup third-round victory over Chesterfield on 8 January 2022, marking the occasion with an assist.
At 17 years and 122 days old, Hall became the youngest player ever to start an FA Cup fixture for Chelsea, announcing himself as a serious prospect.
Since completing his move to St James’ Park in 2024, Hall has developed into one of the Premier League’s most dependable fullbacks and has earned four senior England caps.
Last season he appeared in 47 games for Newcastle across all competitions, including 30 in the Premier League, where he averaged an impressive 6.33 duels won per game.
With Luke Shaw’s contract set to expire next summer, United have earmarked Hall as the ideal long-term replacement for the England international, per the report.
England Under-21 coach Lee Carsley has previously described Hall as “outstanding,” a label that underlines why he is attracting interest from one of the game’s biggest clubs.
Hall is reportedly open to leaving St James’ Park, particularly after feeling that a positional change implemented by former coach Eddie Howe cost him a place at the World Cup.
United had multiple left-back options available last season, with Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, and Patrick Dorgu all featuring in the position at various points during the campaign.
Malacia has since left the club, and head coach Michael Carrick has largely preferred Shaw as his first-choice option, while Dorgu has been used further forward.
Promising youngsters Harry Amass and Diego Leon are also in the squad, though both are considered long-term prospects rather than players ready for consistent first-team football.
Newcastle will likely demand a fee well above Hall’s £34 million Transfermarkt valuation, with three years still remaining on his current contract at St James’ Park.
Hall’s combination of defensive reliability and attacking quality from fullback would provide United with greater balance on both sides of the pitch under Carrick.
