Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on signing Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, according to a report from Football Insider.
The 22-year-old Belgian has impressed greatly since making the move to Celtic from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg, winning two league titles and two domestic cup competitions.
Engels delivered a productive campaign last season, scoring seven goals and registering eight assists across 46 appearances in all competitions.
Transfermarkt values the midfielder at around £17m, and despite his contract running until 2028, he is reportedly open to leaving Celtic for a bigger challenge.
The midfielder is naturally a right-footed box-to-box player but can also provide cover in the defensive midfield role, as well as at right-back and right wing-back if required.
Engels is technically sound, capable of threading passes between the lines, making surging runs from deep, and contributing defensively without possession.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi is said to be keen on adding further depth to his midfield despite already spending a combined £185m on Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali this summer.
Spurs currently have Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Conor Gallagher as additional options in deeper midfield positions alongside the new arrivals.
Bergvall is said to be open to leaving Spurs in order to play regularly and further develop his career, which could create an opening for Engels to come in.
Tottenham will not be playing European football next season, which raises genuine questions about whether adding more midfield depth is truly necessary at this stage.
Despite that, Engels represents potential long-term value and could prove a shrewd acquisition if Spurs decide to make a concrete approach for the player.
Tottenham have already been active in revamping their defensive options, bringing in Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke this summer.
The club also added Martin Dubravka to provide cover and competition in the goalkeeping department as De Zerbi continues to reshape the squad.
