Manchester United face their most demanding campaign in years as Michael Carrick prepares to balance Premier League commitments with a return to Champions League football.
The 45-year-old manager lost just two Premier League games from his 17 in charge last term, providing a strong foundation heading into the new season.
However, the added fixture congestion that comes with European competition could test the squad’s depth in ways not previously experienced under Carrick’s watch.
INEOS moved to address midfield concerns this summer by completing a £35m deal to sign Youri Tielemans from fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.
The Belgian arrives with over 200 top-flight appearances to his name, giving United a proven and experienced option in the centre of the park.
Tielemans made his first appearance for the club in a 1-1 pre-season draw with Champions League winners PSG, coming off the bench with 25 minutes remaining in the 65th minute.
Despite the limited time on the pitch, the 29-year-old completed 100% of his passes, registered five ball recoveries, and created one chance in an eye-catching cameo.
His five ball recoveries were the highest of any United midfielder on the night, while two tackles added further evidence of his defensive contribution from midfield.
Yet despite those encouraging signs, United appear unwilling to stop there, with Foot Mercato reporting that Monaco’s Lamine Camara is now a genuine transfer target for the club.
The 22-year-old Senegalese international could be available for a fee in the region of £42m, with Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest also said to be interested.
Camara built a formidable reputation during the 2025/26 campaign as a box-to-box midfielder, completing an impressive 86% pass completion rate while averaging 1.7 chances created per 90 minutes.
Both of those figures surpassed those of new signing Tielemans, with Camara’s numbers placing him above 90% of midfielders across Europe in those categories.
Defensively, the Monaco star also outperformed Tielemans, winning more ground duels and making more tackles per 90, ranking in the top 8% of midfielders on the continent in those areas.
Journalist Zach Lowy has described Camara as “one of the best young midfielders on the market,” a reputation that has understandably attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The likes of Manu Kone, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga have also been linked with moves to Old Trafford this summer, though those conversations have since gone quiet.
A deal for Camara at £42m would represent outstanding value for a player who could contribute both immediately and over the long term to Carrick’s project.
The United board clearly identifies central midfield depth as a priority, with a two-man midfield setup demanding players who can function effectively at both ends of the pitch.
Camara appears to offer precisely that blend, with his statistics suggesting he is a more complete option than Tielemans in the specific role Carrick demands.
While it would be tough on Tielemans to face immediate competition for his place, the data points firmly in favour of Camara as the superior fit for United’s system.
With the transfer window still open, INEOS will be under pressure to move quickly if they are to fend off competition from Liverpool and others for the Monaco midfielder’s signature.
