Manchester United are reportedly planning to strengthen their left-back position this summer and have identified Real Racing Club teenager Jorge Salinas as a key target.
The 19-year-old defender began his youth career at Marina Sport before progressing through stints at Monte and Bansander before joining Racing’s academy at the age of 12.
Salinas forced his way into the first team a couple of years ago and has since developed into one of the most promising young defenders in Spanish football.
Last campaign, the youngster was a regular starter for Racing, registering seven assists and keeping seven clean sheets across 33 La Liga 2 appearances while helping his side earn promotion.
His performances at El Sardinero Stadium earned him a place in the Spain squad for the U19 European Championship, where he helped his country win the competition.
Spanish outlet Sport reports that Manchester United sent scouts to watch Salinas during the tournament and were impressed enough to consider triggering his £14m release clause.
TEAMtalk report that United have identified Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as their primary left-back target this summer, with Salinas serving as a credible alternative option if that move falls through.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also circling, meaning United face serious competition from established European heavyweights to secure the teenager’s signature.
The Blaugrana are reportedly unwilling to trigger his release clause and instead plan to submit a bid of around €8m including bonuses, with an openness to sending a player on loan to Racing as part of any agreement, and Salinas is said to be open to a move to Camp Nou.
United’s need at left-back has become increasingly pressing, with Luke Shaw entering the final 12 months of his contract and having endured persistent fitness problems throughout his time at Old Trafford.
Patrick Dorgu was brought in as a long-term successor to Shaw, but under manager Michael Carrick he has been used primarily as a winger rather than in a defensive role.
With their left-back options stretched and long-term planning a priority, Salinas represents the kind of high-potential acquisition that could serve United well in the years ahead.
