Newcastle United have opened talks to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez as they push to rebuild their midfield following a turbulent summer.

The Magpies have already lost both Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali this summer, leaving a significant void in the engine room at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle moved quickly to address those departures, signing 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba from AS Monaco.

However, with both new additions still very young, the club is keen to bring in a more experienced option to provide balance and maturity in the middle of the park.

Joao Palhinha had been identified as a primary target, with the Bayern Munich man boasting 101 Premier League appearances for Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

Aston Villa have since entered talks to sign the Portuguese midfielder, forcing Newcastle to cast their net wider in search of a viable alternative.

Gonzalez has now emerged as a surprise target, despite struggling to nail down a regular starting role at Manchester City since his £52m arrival in February 2025.

The 24-year-old featured for just 1,567 minutes across the Premier League last season, though he did catch the eye with a strong performance in a 3-1 victory against AFC Bournemouth in November.

His defensive output was also impressive, with an average of 2.4 tackles per 90 in the Premier League, a figure that was joint-highest in the Manchester City squad and slightly above Guimaraes’ average of 2.3.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Newcastle have now formally opened talks to sign Gonzalez, with the Spaniard reportedly open to leaving City under new manager Enzo Maresca.

There is a feeling that Gonzalez will be viewed as surplus to requirements by Maresca, having won both the FA Cup and EFL Cup with the club in 2026.

The midfielder currently earns £75,000 a week, and while his defensive qualities suggest he could be a strong replacement for Guimaraes, his deal structure at City remains unclear.

It is uncertain what fee Manchester City would demand to sanction a departure, with the club having paid £52m to bring him to the Etihad just over a year ago.

Newcastle’s search has been further complicated after Marseille midfielder Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg rejected a move to St. James’ Park, and Palhinha is now reportedly in talks about a return to Portugal with Benfica.

Manager Matthias Jaissle’s side are clearly determined to add experience to their midfield, and Gonzalez represents an intriguing, if unexpected, solution to that problem.
