Cardiff City snatch a stunning 1-1 Championship draw against Wrexham thanks to a last-gasp free-kick from Rubin Colwill in the eighth minute of added time.

George Dobson brought down Joel Colwill on the edge of the box, handing his brother Rubin the opportunity to step up and deliver.

Rubin Colwill lashed a brilliant free-kick over the wall and past Anthony Patterson to cancel out what looked like a certain Wrexham victory in the Welsh derby.

The equaliser denied Wrexham their first win in the Welsh capital since 1992, a record that had looked set to finally end at Cardiff City Stadium.

Kieffer Moore had given Wrexham the lead inside just three minutes, the former Cardiff forward continuing his habit of haunting his old club with his seventh goal against the Bluebirds.

Moore’s opener was his first goal since February, ending a run of 11 Wrexham games without scoring after Wrexham returned to the Championship following their season in League One.

Wrexham dominated large portions of the contest, registering 18 goal attempts compared to Cardiff’s 11, and ultimately paid the price for failing to put the game beyond the hosts.

Cardiff’s defensive resources were stretched thin going into the match, with injuries to Calum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish forcing Joel Bagan inside to partner Gabriel Osho in central defence.

The makeshift partnership was exposed almost immediately, with Danny Imray’s ball forward catching the hosts off guard after Cardiff only partially cleared a Lewis O’Brien free-kick, allowing Moore to break beyond Bagan and rifle home.

Cardiff goalkeeper Nathan Trott was kept busy throughout, tipping over Callum Doyle’s header and later making a crucial stop with his foot from an Ollie Rathbone-assisted chance, while Doyle also crashed a rasping drive against the post.

Cardiff slowly grew into the game as the first half progressed, with Jack Moylan scooping over and Yousef Salech going close after Patterson reacted smartly to claim a loose ball from a short Zak Vyner back pass.

Cardiff introduced the Colwill brothers just after the hour mark in a bid to shift momentum, and the substitution ultimately proved decisive in the most dramatic of fashions.

Dominic Hyam headed against his own crossbar as Cardiff pushed desperately for an equaliser in the closing stages, before Rubin Colwill produced the moment that secured a share of the spoils.

The point ensures Wrexham’s long wait for a league win in Cardiff continues, while the Bluebirds will take enormous encouragement from the character they showed to salvage something from an extremely difficult afternoon.
