Tottenham Hotspur are in advanced discussions to sign Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Romano reported on X that Spurs made their first approach over a potential deal last month, with Liverpool initially reluctant to sanction a sale.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 after catching the eye with his performances in the Eredivisie.
Gakpo has enjoyed considerable success at Anfield, contributing to Premier League title and Carabao Cup victories during his time at the club.
Last season proved to be a mixed campaign for the forward, who managed nine goals and six assists across 52 appearances in all competitions.
Despite those numbers, Gakpo retained his place in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup, underlining his continued standing at international level.
Romano wrote: “Tottenham are in direct talks with Cody Gakpo’s camp over possible move this summer, after approaches revealed in July. Deal depends on Liverpool decision; doors closed back in July but now could depend on financial package/Barcola pursuit. THFC are trying.”
The report indicates Liverpool may reconsider their stance if Tottenham submit a sufficiently lucrative proposal and the club successfully pursues a deal for Bradley Barcola.
Transfermarkt value the 6ft 4in forward at around £51m, and with his contract running until 2030, Liverpool hold strong leverage in any potential negotiations.
Gakpo is predominantly deployed on the left flank but has also provided cover in a central striking role during his time at Anfield.
Tottenham have been heavily active in the transfer market this summer under manager Roberto De Zerbi following a difficult campaign last season.
Having strengthened their goalkeeping, defensive and midfield departments earlier in the window, the North London club have now turned their attention to reinforcing the attack.
A player of Gakpo’s Premier League experience and quality would represent a significant addition to De Zerbi’s squad at 27 years old.
Whether Tottenham can secure a deal before the September 1st transfer deadline remains to be seen, with Liverpool’s stance on selling still far from certain.
