Chelsea have made contact with former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum over a potential free transfer following a chaotic end to their transfer window.
The Blues were left critically short in central midfield after selling Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a deal worth £125 million, a fee that equalled the British transfer record.
Chelsea had identified Monaco’s Lamine Camara as the primary replacement for Fernandez, but that move collapsed at the eleventh hour on deadline day.
According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea subsequently reached out to Wijnaldum as they searched for an emergency solution to bolster their midfield options.
The 35-year-old Dutch international is currently without a club after departing Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, making him eligible to sign outside the standard transfer window.
Wijnaldum’s availability on a free transfer made him an attractive short-term option as Chelsea looked to compensate for the significant void left by Fernandez’s departure.
The Dutchman built a formidable reputation in English football with stints at Newcastle and Liverpool, accumulating 217 top-flight appearances between the two clubs.
His time at Anfield proved the most decorated period of his career, with Wijnaldum winning the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, and Super Cup during his spell on Merseyside.
Since leaving Liverpool in 2021, Wijnaldum endured difficult periods at PSG and Roma, where he spent time on loan, before eventually moving to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq.
His final campaign in the Gulf proved productive, with the midfielder scoring 17 goals in 34 matches before departing the club at the beginning of the summer.
The Netherlands international’s experience, versatility, and ability to contribute from midfield could have represented a useful short-term fix for Xabi Alonso’s squad.
However, Fabrizio Romano has since reported that Chelsea will not sign Wijnaldum, with the club “currently playing down all reports about the Dutch midfielder.”
It remains to be seen how Chelsea will address their midfield depth issues, with free agents still signable outside the summer window.
