Chelsea are plotting an ambitious move for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, with reports suggesting the club is prepared to spend £103 million to land the Spaniard.
Spanish outlet El Nacional has reported that the Chelsea hierarchy is already moving forward under Xabi Alonso, with his approach for Lopez having received full approval from the board.
Lopez has made an excellent start to the current La Liga season, contributing four goals and two assists while starting every one of Barcelona’s league games so far.
The 23-year-old missed the World Cup through injury but has returned in impressive form and continues to grow as one of Barcelona’s most important midfield figures.
Chelsea are in pressing need of midfield reinforcement following the departure of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a deal worth £125 million during the summer.
The west London club brought in 12 new faces over the summer transfer window, with Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos, and Enzo Fernandez among the notable exits from the squad.
Chelsea were active right up until the transfer deadline in search of a new midfielder, with Roma’s Manu Kone and Monaco’s Lamine Camara among their targets, with a deal for Camara coming closest to completion.
Defensively, Lopez works hard to press high up the pitch, man marks superbly, and reads the game very well to make interceptions and tackles.
Barcelona hold Lopez in high regard as a product of their La Masia academy, but a nine-figure bid from Chelsea could realistically force the Catalan club to consider selling him.
Chelsea can also offer Lopez a significant wage increase, meaning that personal terms are unlikely to present a major obstacle if the two clubs agree on a transfer fee.
According to the report, “Fermín wants to be a key player and knows that at Chelsea, Xabi Alonso would offer him a leading role from day one, but he’s also gaining increasing influence at Barça.”
The report adds that Alonso “is convinced that Fermín can transform his team,” underlining just how highly the Chelsea head coach rates the Barcelona midfielder.
The report describes the potential transfer as “one of the biggest battles of the market,” with Barcelona understandably reluctant to lose such a promising talent.
Alonso continues to seek squad depth and additional firepower, and with strong financial backing already in place, Chelsea appear well-positioned to mount a serious challenge for Lopez’s signature.
