Chelsea are determined to sign AS Roma midfielder Manu Koné, with reports from Tuttomercatoweb confirming the club’s continued interest in the French international.
The Blues entered the final stages of the summer transfer window with clear ambitions to recruit a midfielder capable of making an immediate impact in the starting XI.
Chelsea did add Jordan Henderson from Brentford and Valentin Barco from Strasbourg, but neither signing fully addressed the need for a dynamic, influential presence in central midfield.
Henderson has been viewed primarily as an experienced leader for Chelsea’s young squad, while Barco is still considered a developing prospect needing time to adjust to the Premier League.
Xabi Alonso’s side also made a late attempt to sign Lamine Camara before the window closed, but that move similarly fell through without success.
Chelsea had made direct contact with Roma over Koné, with French journalist Santi Aouna reporting the approach, only for Roma to reject a formal £51m offer on deadline day.
Despite that failed summer pursuit, Chelsea remain firmly interested in securing Koné’s signature and are determined to reignite their approach for the 25-year-old.
Liverpool have also entered the picture, having made enquiries of their own for Koné, and could make a formal move that complicates Chelsea’s plans significantly.
The need for midfield reinforcement at Stamford Bridge has been laid bare in recent matches, including a game against Arsenal where Malo Gusto and Reece James were forced into midfield roles.
Chelsea were also run ragged by Leeds United’s midfield in the first 60 minutes of their 6-3 Carabao Cup defeat last Wednesday, further exposing the lack of quality depth in that area.
Koné has been described as “extraordinary” by his former Toulouse youth coach Jean-Christophe Debu, suggesting the player possesses the quality to transform Alonso’s struggling engine room.
Across 262 minutes of Serie A action this season, Koné has completed an impressive 91.4% of his passes while recording a long-ball accuracy of 85.7%.
His 75.57% touch rate further underlines how effectively he retains possession and helps drive transitions from deep midfield positions.
Defensively, Koné has also impressed in Italy, averaging 4.12 successful duels and 2.06 tackles per 90 minutes, making him a genuine all-round option in the middle of the park.
Valued at £42m by Transfermarkt, Koné represents a significant but potentially transformative investment for whichever club wins the race for his signature.
