After leaving Newcastle United in July 2026, Eddie Howe is now being linked with the biggest job in English football management.
Football Insider’s Wayne Veysey reports that Howe is being lined up as a possible replacement for Thomas Tuchel as England manager.
Tuchel’s position has become less secure as the FA reviews England’s performance at the 2026 World Cup following a painful semi-final exit.
England reached the last four but suffered a 2-1 defeat against Argentina after surrendering a late lead in the closing stages.
That result prompted scrutiny of Tuchel’s decisions and the team’s failure to capitalise on another promising tournament position.
Veysey adds that Howe is believed to be ready to accept the England job if it becomes available, with the timing considered right for the 48-year-old.
Howe’s record at Newcastle would make him a natural candidate, having guided the club back into the Champions League and delivered the 2024/25 Carabao Cup.
That League Cup triumph was Newcastle’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years, underlining the scale of what Howe achieved during his five-year tenure at St James’ Park.
Across 231 matches in all competitions, Howe recorded 116 wins at a 50.2% overall win rate, with a best Premier League finish of fourth in the 2022/23 season.
His departure in July followed a disappointing final season and growing frustration over the direction of recruitment at the club.
Newcastle moved swiftly to appoint Matthias Jaissle from Al-Ahli, paying around £9.5million in compensation and handing the 38-year-old a four-year contract.
Jaissle has made an encouraging start, with Newcastle drawing 2-2 with Liverpool before beating Tottenham 2-0 in their opening Premier League fixtures.
A dramatic 2-2 draw against Bournemouth followed, with substitute Jacob Ramsey striking in the 88th minute to rescue a point after Newcastle trailed by two goals.
That comeback kept Jaissle unbeaten through his first three league matches, collecting five points from a possible nine.
No change has yet been confirmed and Tuchel officially remains England manager while the FA’s review continues.
However, Howe’s availability gives the FA a credible and proven domestic option should the review lead to a decision to move in a different direction.
