Liverpool made contact with Inter Milan regarding a potential deal for midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic, according to a report from TEAMtalk.
The 21-year-old son of Inter legend Dejan Stankovic came through the Nerazzurri’s youth academy before struggling to break into the senior first-team picture.
He subsequently joined FC Luzern on loan to gain regular playing time before making a permanent move to Club Brugge last summer.
Stankovic enjoyed a highly productive campaign in the Belgian Pro League, registering 12 goal contributions across 49 appearances in all competitions.
He also played his part in helping Club Brugge win the league title, a run of form that earned him a place in the Serbian national team.
Impressed by his development, Inter Milan decided to bring Stankovic back to the club this summer, and he has since attracted significant transfer interest.
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were both credited with interest in signing the midfielder before ultimately shifting their attention toward other targets.
Liverpool’s enquiry came during negotiations with Inter over the sale of Curtis Jones, though the Reds ultimately decided against pursuing a deal despite selling the Englishman to the Italian giants.
Liverpool were focused on strengthening their attacking options this summer following Mohamed Salah’s departure as a free agent, and were satisfied with their existing midfield depth.
However, TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool are considering reinforcing their engine room in the next transfer window and remain keen on the Serbian international.
Stankovic is valued at around £27m by Transfermarkt and is contracted to Inter Milan until 2031, meaning the club are under no pressure to sell.
Standing at 6ft 2in, the right-footed midfielder is capable of operating in both defensive midfield and box-to-box roles with considerable versatility.
He is noted for his ability to thread passes between the lines, his set-piece delivery, and his solidity in defensive contributions throughout a match.
Whether Liverpool return with a concrete offer to sign Stankovic in the next window remains to be seen, but the initial groundwork has clearly already been laid.
