Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha ahead of the January 2027 transfer window.
The Red Devils have made a disappointing start to the 2026/27 Premier League season, managing only four points from their opening three fixtures despite heavy summer investment.
German outlet Fussball Daten reports that United have already made official contact with Borussia Dortmund to open initial discussions over a deal for the 25-year-old.
Dortmund value Nmecha at £86 million following a strong campaign at club level and an impressive showing at this year’s World Cup with Germany.
United are described as the most determined suitors in the race, ahead of both Newcastle United and Nmecha’s former club Manchester City.
“The Red Devils are considered the most persistent interested party and have already officially contacted Borussia Dortmund to hold initial talks for Felix Nmecha,” Fussball Daten reported.
“While Manchester United initiated talks at club level, Newcastle went on the offensive with a direct swap deal plus a transfer fee. Interested clubs are expected to intensify their contacts ahead of the 2027 winter transfer window.”
Dortmund extended Nmecha’s contract until June 30, 2030, as recently as March 2026, signalling their desire to hold onto the midfielder long-term.
“Borussia Dortmund’s management considers Felix Nmecha, who joined the club on July 3, 2023, and extended his contract until June 30, 2030, on March 11, 2026, to be an indispensable pillar of the team,” the German source added.
“It is expected that BVB would only enter into negotiations for a transfer fee of at least €100 million.”
Nmecha joined Dortmund from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023 for approximately £25.6 million, meaning any deal would represent a massive profit for the Bundesliga club.
After an initial period where he struggled to justify expectations, Nmecha grew into one of Dortmund’s most influential midfielders over recent seasons.
United already strengthened their midfield considerably during the summer, bringing in Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba, and Youri Tielemans, as well as goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
Interest in Nmecha from Premier League clubs surfaced in the summer window too, but no English side moved decisively, with clubs instead focusing on domestic transfers.
The January transfer window opens on January 1, 2027, and while no formal offer has been tabled, United’s position as frontrunners suggests talks could escalate quickly.
