Lionel Messi’s trophy haul reached an extraordinary 49 team titles after Inter Miami claimed the Campeones Cup in 2026, reigniting comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo.
The two players are widely regarded as the greatest footballers of their generation, combining for over 1,500 career goals between them across their storied careers.
Together they have claimed nine Champions League titles, 18 domestic league championships, and three senior international tournament victories among countless other honours.
Both players are now in the twilight stages of their careers, Messi in the United States with Inter Miami and Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia, yet silverware continues to follow them.
Ronaldo has accumulated 34 team trophies across his career at clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and now in the Saudi Pro League.
Messi’s individual trophy cabinet alone is remarkable, featuring eight Ballon d’Or awards won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2023.
Ronaldo has claimed five Ballon d’Or titles of his own, winning in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017, making him the only player to come close to Messi’s haul.
Despite years of intense on-field rivalry, both players have spoken publicly about their relationship with a notable degree of mutual respect and professionalism.
“We’re colleagues,” Ronaldo told Marca in 2014. “We’re work friends, so to speak, and so, obviously, we don’t have a relationship outside the world of football, just as we don’t with a lot of other players.”
Ronaldo also addressed the competition directly, saying “He tries to do his best for his club and for his national team, as I do, and there is a degree of rivalry with both of us trying to do the best for the teams we represent… We have to look on this rivalry with a positive spirit because it’s a good thing.”
