Newcastle United suffered their heaviest result of the Matthias Jaissle era on Monday night, losing 4-1 to Leeds United at Elland Road in the Premier League.
The Magpies had travelled to Yorkshire unbeaten in the league, but that record was emphatically ended by a dominant home performance from Leeds from the first whistle.
Leeds played with greater speed, strength and aggression throughout, and Newcastle were unable to establish any meaningful control in midfield during the contest.
An early injury to Nico Gonzalez significantly complicated Newcastle’s evening, leaving Jaissle scrambling to reorganise his options in the middle of the park.
Teenager Sean Steur was introduced alongside Lewis Miley, handing Jaissle an extremely young midfield pairing against one of the league’s most energetic and physical sides.
The damage arrived early, with an Ao Tanaka effort striking two Newcastle players before Lewis Miley was credited with an own goal after just 32 minutes.
Jayden Bogle doubled the lead shortly after, getting the final touch on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s powerful header to put Leeds firmly in control.
Calvert-Lewin then forced his way into the penalty area and calmly converted Leeds’ third goal before half-time, effectively killing the match as a contest.
Noah Okafor produced a brilliant finish to make it four early in the second half, before Bazoumana Touré pulled one back for Newcastle in the final minute as a consolation.
Jaissle admitted after the match that his players had been unable to match Leeds physically, which represented a damning assessment of how far his side still needs to travel.
Newcastle lost several established midfielders in a dramatic summer rebuild, and the inexperience in their engine room became painfully apparent once Gonzalez was forced off injured.
According to AS, Newcastle are now plotting to trigger Luka Sucic’s £51 million release clause at Real Sociedad as they look to address the problem.
No formal offer has been made at this stage, but triggering the clause in full would remove Real Sociedad’s power to block a transfer, providing Sucic himself wanted the move.
The 24-year-old Croatian, whom former Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic described as ‘very powerful’, joined Real Sociedad from RB Salzburg in 2024 and is contracted at the club until 2029.
Sucic has already scored two league goals this season, including a dramatic late winner away to Elche, and he can operate as both a central and attacking midfielder.
The Croatian is left-footed, carries a threat from distance and is comfortable receiving the ball in tight, crowded areas of the pitch under pressure.
Jaissle coached Sucic for two seasons at Salzburg, and together they won consecutive Austrian league titles, the Austrian Cup, and also reached the Champions League knockout rounds.
That existing relationship between manager and player provides an obvious foundation for Newcastle’s reported interest in bringing Sucic to St. James’ Park.
Sucic already understands the intensity and demands that Jaissle expects from his players, and could quickly add more creativity and control to Newcastle’s struggling midfield.
Real Sociedad may also consider negotiating below the full release clause fee, or allowing payments to be spread across instalments, having originally signed Sucic for just £9 million.
