Liverpool have made a formal offer to sign RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, with Fabrizio Romano reporting the Reds have put forward the best salary proposal received by the 19-year-old.
Despite Liverpool’s advances, RB Leipzig remain adamant the player will not leave this summer and expect a nine-digit transfer fee if that stance is to change.
Andoni Iraola has pledged to embrace Liverpool’s identity and play fast, attacking football synonymous with Jurgen Klopp’s long and victorious Anfield reign.
Liverpool under Iraola are expected to step away from the measured possession football employed by Arne Slot, a system that worked brilliantly in the title-winning 2024/25 campaign but became stale this season.
The resulting collapse in form led to what can only be described as a dismal Premier League title defence, ending Slot’s tenure at Anfield and ushering in a new era under Iraola.
Mohamed Salah’s departure has left a significant void, with the Egyptian having been the definitive superstar of Liverpool’s recent golden period, making his replacement an enormous challenge for FSG.
The situation is further complicated by Ibrahima Konate joining Real Madrid on a free transfer and Hugo Ekitike facing a race against time to recover from a ruptured Achilles heel suffered in April.
Described as a “generational talent” by journalist Bence Bocsák, Diomande joined Leipzig from Leganes and took the Bundesliga by storm during his first season as a first-team regular.
Statistician Pythagoras in Boots noted that Diomande has “incredible defensive numbers”, with his tenacity underpinning his potency in the final third and overall creativity on the pitch.
The comparisons with Roberto Firmino are rooted in what Diomande could offer Iraola’s system, potentially serving as the rhythmic accompaniment Alexander Isak needs to thrive from the number nine position.
Firmino was famously described by Klopp as someone who “played 12 instruments in our orchestra”, threading together the attacks of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane across Liverpool’s most dominant years.
Diomande posted 12 goals and 7 assists across 32 matches in the Bundesliga this season, compared to Salah’s 7 goals and 7 assists from 27 appearances in an underwhelming Premier League campaign.
The 19-year-old also significantly outperformed Salah in areas such as successful dribbles, recoveries, and duels won per 90 minutes, suggesting he brings a more dynamic and physically robust profile.
With Ekitike sidelined and Salah departed, Liverpool’s need for attacking reinforcements is acute, and Diomande represents a player who could supply both Isak and Ekitike upon his eventual return from injury.
Whether Liverpool can convince Leipzig to sell remains the key question, but their willingness to submit a leading salary offer signals just how seriously Iraola and FSG are pursuing this particular target.
